One of the issues is that if anyone is sitting or standing on the wing then you won't be able to slide it.

As a learner Canoe sailor and long term trapeze user I'm not yet convinced that a sliding seat is more difficult than a trapeze on my gusty reservoir, at least when the sailor's calves are as ancient as mine.

The weight of the seat has some interesting effects. Not the least is its effect on the roll inertia of the boat - if you are running deep the boat is less rocky if you slide the seat all the way out and sit on the boat than it is if you leave the seat in the middle and sit out a bit.

The big issue with the seat is definitely fore and aft trim. The setup on an IC where there's a fore and aft track works, but is clumsy and you can't operate it when you're on the seat.

I'm mulling over a twist grip T foil rudder for the proposed skinny ICs, with the idea of having the seat in the aft position all the time, with the T foil neutral downhill and winding on lift upwind to get the trim right. A partially foil supported IC upwind might not be very slow... Still need to be able to run the seat foprward for light stuff I fear though: shame, I'd love to lose the adjustment completely.

yeh but that would be mega heavy to engineer id think for a wing of that size to slide etc, would add a lot of weight

Would the sliding seat principle work for a sliding wing?  Maybe if an 18ft skiff type boat had one massive sliding wing there could be less drag on the leeward side and a bigger righting moment on the windward side allowing much bigger sail areas and faster boats.

I just had a look at the Skate site... some very interesting ideas it has to be said. Looks like they could be a lot of fun. Not sure I would be wanting to sail it inland on a gusty pond though...

There's a twin-plank class called the Skate in Australia that tried to allow traps and racks. They set the rack width so the centre of gravity was theoretically in the same place on the trap and rack boat as it was on the plank boat (where the skipper has a short plank and the forward hand has a 10 footer).

Apparently the rack and trap boats were uncompetitive until the width was increased once more. I assume the reason is the drag of the lower rack and the fact that the weight of the plank adds weight on the right side of the boat. That's the reason the guy who owns the fastest small course-racing sailboat (C Class Cogito) is also a fan of planks.

They're not necessarily better than wires, but they certainly have their advantages.
