Jaffa Cakes: Biscuit or Cake? The source of one of the most complex conundrums ever to challenge mankind: Is it a cake or is it a biscuit? These small circular sponges topped with chocolate and squidgy orange stuff have been the subject of much debate over the years. Even the British government has become embroiled in this web of snack-related intrigue. At present the Jaffa Cake is classified as a cake but the British government is attempting to get it reclassified as a biscuit. This would mean it would come under a higher tax bracket as biscuits aren't as perishable as cakes, or something technical like that. It is not clear how much more expensive the Jaffa Cake would become should this proposal go through Parliament, but it's possible they could move from the realms of 'everyday favourite' to become more a much more exclusive item. In which case, they could end up being treated similarly to fine wines, so that in the future, small groups of Jaffa Cake connoisseurs might be found in darkened cellars discussing texture, nose, and full-bodied flavour. Whatever happens, the Jaffa Cake will retain a unique place in the biscuit/cake market. We should all join http://www.jafferygoodness.com/ the unofficial Jaffa Cake fan club (im so bored at college at the moment!!). |

I have a friend who works for Fox's. She tells me there is a very large difference between a bisuit and a cake...
Apparently biscuits get baked twice, cakes only get baked once....The answer should be simple...but then again with the EU classing carrots as a fruit who knows what will happen next...... |

Arrgh! If you'd used the time you had French lessons to listen to teacher, rather than trawl the dictionary for elusive and impractical swearwords, you'd know that "biscuit" means "twice baked" and it wouldn't come as a surprise... As for a carrot, it's never been (and cannot be) classified as a fruit. Tomatoes are fruit, so are courgettes and sweet peppers and aubergines, but no carrots... Fruit comes from a flower, that's all - nothing to do with sugar content, or culinary usage.
There! I'm shelving my teacher's hat for the time being... |

BNS - I am not joking about the carrot! You and I (and hopefully everyone else here) knows that by biological definition a carrot is a vegetable. However, I think it is the Italians, wanted it reclassified as a fruit as it is used in carrot cake which is a desert (and presumably fruit carries either less tax or a higher subisdy than vegetables).
Look it up it is true (or it was a few years back).... Oh for reference I spent most of my French lessons drooling over the French assistant...she was fit (and I was a teenager). Paul - reminiscing about his mis-spent youth |

Well funny you should say that BnS, but I was (or there abouts anyway) and often berate myself for not continueing with it. Did a refresher in the evenings in the 90's but not really diligent about it. Still, it's never too late I guess. |
