I was out on sunday. The race started horribly and i crossed the line just over two minutes behind everyone!! I fort my way through every one to finish 3rd across the line and 6/36 on handicap.

To add insult to injury i finished 1 min 40 behind the leader on handicap  grrr....

Littl'un and I have done a couple of 'fun-races' in the Vareo, she's really enjoyed it and it certainly focuses the mind on keeping the boat even flatter than normal. it's certainly fun trying to remember to tell your 'crew' that you are going to tack or gybe....I'm not used to doing that and she gets pretty grumpy when I forget ! I'm very conscious of not scaring her, but they do seem to absolutely love it when the boat is planing with the kite flying !

My littlest girl got put off by one race, someone closed the door on us
rounding a mark and we collided and if that wasn't enough Dr Death
rammed us rounding the windward mark, she's never raced since.

She would still go out in the Bic, if she had access to a mobile crane to
launch it and clement weather, two years now we've had the duffest of
summers..

But I'm hopeful her new school will get her going again they offer sailing as
an activity, I've always found others do a better job with kids when it comes
to potentially scarey activities.

My daughter was wavng to everyone but was most upset that they didn't wave back. i was trying to explain to her that they were racing so were concentrating on what they were doing and not wavng back. She wasn't impressed!

I know all about the frightening bit. i learnt to sail when i was 13 and had a bad capsize and I would not step in to a boat for about a year. When I did I loved it.

one of the reasons i bought the Gp was so i could take my 3 year old out, She loves it and likes it when we go "fast" she also likes shouting and waving to people on the river bank.  To be honest taking her out and watching her enjoy herself and spending quality time with her is exactly what sailing is about.  If someone ahd said to me 4 years ago i would be cruising up the river in a GP14 i would of laughed, but i actually really enjoy it.

You've got to be so carefull when they are young - We had our kids out in Optimists on a little non tidal river club near us when they were 7-8.  It was a nice light and sunny summers day and after having had a few weekends practise they were happily reaching backwards and forwards on their own.  Suddenly a little gust came and they both got frightened.  There was no real drama or capsizes but they both lost confidnece and didn't set foot in a boat again for a couple of years. Doh

Well done BNS...i remember my first race at the helm....I capsized in front of the entire fleet with 20 seconds to go and became a mobile obstruction half way up the first beat!

My daughter was loving it until the wind picked up when going upwind and i was having to lean out at bit to keep us nicely blanced (in a borrowed Mirror). We do a thing called sailing for fun which I may take her to next year if she is still keen.

I did buy her a hot chocolate when we got to shore and she liked that (and the proceeded to get the boys to chase her all over the place.....)

Contender443 and I took our younger daughter (6) in the RS200 yesterday for the morning race.

Originally, she was supposed to go with Daddy alone but it was a little too windy for her to handle the jib and spinnaker, so I came along. The first 2 laps were spent rolled in a ball at the bottom of the boat, complaining she was cold-bored-whenarewegettingbacktothebach and boat-handling wasn't too easy. After a few stupid jokes, a hefty dose of singing ("If you're happy and you know it, clap ") and a bar of chocolate, the mood had totally changed and she was cheering and laughing. When we told her it was the last lap, she was quite disappointed. Children, uh...

In the afternoon, she went to play with a friend whose dad has a Mirror and she was helming the boat for a while (under friend's dad careful supervision).

Meanwhile, I was plonked at the helm of the RS200 for the first time, with Contender443 as a crew. I'd never driven anything with more than 1 sail and 1 person, so it was a little strange at first.

After a good 10 minutes of practise, we took the start of the afternoon race and bobbed our way round the course. Perfect conditions for me, with enough wind to keep our considerable weight going but not too hairy-scary that I would capsize.

As it was, I didn't capsize the boat (an achievement, considering my sailing standards) and we didn't even finish last! Got to do it again.
