Stop press: Ovington are now suggesting: "920 for 59er Non Trapeze with class rule 150kg crew weight ( if crew is sub 150kg they must have 75% of the difference in correctors). 887 for 59er with trapeze and no min crew weight." Seems fair to me. One for trhe next Sailing Committee... The 29er makes huge sacrifices of stability with a narrow waterline beam, so in general it's always going to have the legs on the stable 3k in displacement conditions. It's also got bigger sails, esp. kite. But I have noticed that on flat water we can sometimes plane earlier than them (e.g. last Sunday); unfortunately that happens less than 5% of the time we're sailing. Most of the time on the water we're beating and/or in displacement mode, where the 29er has the edge. |

Whoops, facts wrong, very good to see the handicap for the V3000 is adjusted - who knows what will be right, but time will tell. The boat is a lot faster than a L3000. How do you think it compares with a 29er? I'm in agreement, the PY of 905 is probably hard on the 59er - its not that fast on the sort of courses we sail on the Medway but it might be different on a true windward/leeward course. Its going to be a great shame for the class if somebody doesn't enforce the no trapeze design since it will then become a different sort of boat for a different type of sailor and clash with the RS500, Laser4000, Osprey, Javelin, ISO and 5o5. In other words there are plenty of single trapeze boats with that sort of performance. It is also a little under canvassed for a trapeze boat when in 2 sail mode. The hull shape is not optimum for a trapeze boat either. |

Check your facts, Redback. The V's at Wilsonian currently sail off a PN 22 points lower than a Laser 3000, as recommended by the CA. According to my calcs, a trapeze plus the lighter crew it enables would permit the 59er to sail off a PN 30-odd points lower than in fat-boy hiking mode. I think the latter mode is not quite up to the 905 rating it currently has, but the real problem for the fatties for whom the boat was originally intended, is that the PN might come down if whippets start sailing the boat with a wire. The trap won't be as much use to the heavier crews. |

you don't need a paddle for sea sailing, just a bigger sail

TT, you were on Fistral, aka home of tourists and chavs. No one in their right mind actually goes there for watersports during the summer. If you had gone a couple of miles down the coast, there is this beauitful beach, about 2 miles long and all the tourists are barriered into a tiny space. Tonnes of surfing space... or windsurfing.

yer we didn't hear any hoots, couldn't see any flags either. And the race officer had a horrible job, they had to spin the course round at one point because the wind swung so much... Yes, the tides were horrible, I will always carry a paddle when on the sea!

oi there was nowt wrong with the finnish of that race (apart from the RIB finnishing you didn't have flag S on it but 2 hoots were given from the commitee boat) give the race officer a break, he tried. (i was sat on shore entering all the entrants into sailwave, possibly the dullest job in a long time). edit: that tide was a beast though, near springs in the solent for you. Edited by mike ellis |

Spent Sunday attempting to race at Hilhead sc - no wind to start with and strong tides meant most of the fleet had to be towed miles back to the startline along with several abandoned races. Then a lot of wind suddenly came in, had one windy race with a bad start, then a second less windy race with a good start but went went the wrong side of the course where there was more tide and less wind - still not got the hang of this water stuff that moves on its own. Finished about 16/27 which isn't great, but there was some good competition and the finish of one race was a little odd...
