Spent the weekend on a 35 foot traditional Norfolk cruising yacht... they're lovely boats, but a pig to manoeuvre quickly! Very big main, biggish genoa, we did about 6mph on the genoa alone yesterday. Anyone interested: traditional Norfolk cruiser

I spent the weekend bombing around Barton Broad on the Moth - not remotely suitable but quite entertaining for everyone else... Lots of big cruisers around for the regatta... |

Summer Hols Roundup! Week 1 - Teaching kids/scouts to sail at Alton Water, was great, sat in Safety boat getting sun tan. If wind got up took out a Vision or Stratos. If wind got up even more, took out Stratos, turtled it, capsized it and then came in (watched by 200 scouts!) Week 2 - spent week on Powerboat instead of Sailing, bliming theives meant I couldn't sail. Oh well was a good week. Week 3 - did my Day Skipper course in Suffolk. Was great although the F7 winds were fine, F8+9 were a little interesting! Still I had a cracking sail. |

Sheppey race was brilliant, 40 miles of estuary sailing, force 4,5 and 6 and new course record 2hrs 10mins by a Tornado.........Didn't realise GRF was there in his Alto untill I studied the video that a friend took. I will edit and post it sometime. I was hoping for the fastest time done in a L2 but some one did better in 94 or 95. Fastest spinny boat in the medium fleet (not bad for an out of date symmetric) but had 4 Blazes ahead of us, we will reel them in next year. Hard work around the docks and we were a bit overwhelmed but kept going. We struggle in big close waves. Low freeboard means kinetics like the Laser and I'm getting too old for that

Medway - Sunday. Light and fickle winds in the morning faded to nothing at one point in the morning race. Our arch rivals in the 59er just pipped us on the line and spent lunchtime moaning about the 59er in the Round the Isle of Sheppy Race using a trapeze but still sailing on the standard handicap. I'm not sure this is a good development although if it goes unchallenged I'll be able to sail my 4000 with the racks out further! No wind at lunchtime and my partner packed the boat up but by 2:30 a breeze appeared from the East and so we unpacked it and had a good race. We were over the line at the start and so had to chase the pack. We caught and beat our 59er tyro's but didn't do well as we never got near the 29ers and only just caught one of 2 V3000s. Interesting comparison here, between the V3000 which is a Laser3000 highly modified but sailing on the same handicap, and the 59er with a trapeze which will be much faster and sails on the same handicap as a 59er without a trapeze. This may develop into a controversail topic - wo wants to start it? |

Spent Sunday attempting to race at Hilhead sc - no wind to start with and strong tides meant most of the fleet had to be towed miles back to the startline along with several abandoned races. Then a lot of wind suddenly came in, had one windy race with a bad start, then a second less windy race with a good start but went went the wrong side of the course where there was more tide and less wind - still not got the hang of this water stuff that moves on its own. Finished about 16/27 which isn't great, but there was some good competition and the finish of one race was a little odd...

oi there was nowt wrong with the finnish of that race (apart from the RIB finnishing you didn't have flag S on it but 2 hoots were given from the commitee boat) give the race officer a break, he tried. (i was sat on shore entering all the entrants into sailwave, possibly the dullest job in a long time). edit: that tide was a beast though, near springs in the solent for you. Edited by mike ellis |
