Hi, we are about to buy a boat with a bent mast which means we can't use it! We have been advised to go to the club's mast graveyard (every club has one). It is for a cherub, so i would obviously want one the same size but if its a bit bigger will that matter or not? Also if its going to have a trapeze wire and asymmetric spinni, do i need to look for a special mast, or will all mast stand up to the extra force? and do masts whcih will work with trapeze wires have an attatchment for it? Cheers

If it is not to badly bent i.e. there are no obvious kinks then you can always straighten it. If not and you need to use another one then the best plan would be to look for one from a boat with a simelar sized rig and then convert to suit with simelar bendyness. 420 might be a bit short, fireball, 470 possably RS400, Laser 4000 and Iso would probably be stiff and heavy You then need to fix what ever caused the previous owner to scrap it and convert to suit. To move fittings around you just need a drill and some small files and time. to attach trap wires you can use proper T terminals with backing plates or just drill a hole each side of the mast and put a ss hook through to tie you trapizes to. provided you are not going for a masthead kite then you do not need any extra support. If you are going masthead which would only be a feasable with 97 or 2005 rules size then you need an extra set of spreaders and cap shrouds going up to the tip of the mast. |

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Which boat are you buying? Whamm? or a newer
boat? If it's newer ( Bistro's e.t.c ) and worth going to masthead. Old RS600 masts have been used. What boat had the RS 800 mast on it Turtle? Just interested to know where potential lost boat are. |

Obviously the stiffness of the mast is directly related
to the power and gust responce you get and then how easy or hard the boat is to sail. My first Cherub was Flying Trifle and she had been set up for some heavy weights (25 / 26 stone ) so she had a M7 mast. And I can tell you that it was a knightmare of a boat to sail as a lightweight. So try and choose a stick that is the right stiffness qualities for your crew weight. This will always be a compromise if you are looking around in the Grave yard. But get the best you can and then consider making a Carbon one to suit your needs better. It isn't to difficult a task and there is lots of help avaliable from the class tech guys and others as well as a DVD and mpegs that show the process. You can then sell the old boat with the old rig and put the new one towards the next boat. If anything go lighter rather than heavyer as you can always support the mast more if you need more power. With caps / D2's / and lowers. |

Yeah its whaam, i have no intention of changing the rig yet, but the mast is bent, i don't know if its repairable but i think not. Will all masts support a single trapeze? |

Your best bet is to put a post on the Cherub mailing list, cos I'm sure theres a load of peeps out there with old alloy masts, designed for Chubs. As for the Yellow boat with the 800 mast, was it at Draycote? Sounds like Iain in Suicide Blone. (V.Sexy boat) |

All masts that are currently on Cherubs? Yes. All mast period? No. But most would. |

Iain has a 600 rig on suicide. Lads, why dont you make a mast? Or if its tin, ive found that a 505 mast is ideal. good and strong - already has trapeze, but is a bit lardy! Cant remember what mast I put on 2539 to begin with! |

i think if we are going to be changing it, it would be good to try double wire because we can allways get the old mast sorted when we mess round with a grave yard 1 and try out new things with it and not worrying about it breaking!!! |
