I think that's a reasonable plan. Although I'm not sure on your list of boats.
And as you have decided that having to get the boat on the roof need not restrict your choice of craft, I think you could broaden your horizons to boats that may suit your needs better.

Enterprise   -   Link

Laser 2000   -  Link

I'm sure others will add to that list.

Sorry the bit I missed was what car you have - an MPV ie Ford Galaxy is a big car to load a doublehander on to so trailering is the easiest and best way forward as to not limit your choices.

The next thing you may want to mention is your location? I know of a sailing club in West London that has about 15 or so boats available for club use.

Jack Sparrow - last post edited to make it clear the list was just of car topable options - so my horizons are now, as you say, much wider.

radixon - Good point about the MPV - I saw the size as a bonus (longer roof) not, as you point out, a hindrance (height). I'm West London based so would be interested in any pointers on clubs with good selections of boats for members use.

Come and join Burghfield.

Junction 12 on the M4.

Club boats - for use by members, include:

RS-Vision, RS-Feva, Enterprise, Laser, Topper, Optimist (although you might find these a little small for you!!).

An active "social sailing" side on a Saturday with the Admirals Club, as well as some great racing on a Wednesday evening or Sunday.

ChrisJ - Thanks for the recommendation, Burghfield would seem to offer lots of options unfortunately M4 J12 would be a bit too much of a trek from my work in the city on a weekday evening - initially the only time I'll have to sail.

there are still Tasars at QM aren't there?

Great boat to learn planing upwind and concentrate on tactics and finesse in handling rather than fishing out spinnakers from under the bow of many others!

Much lighter to car top than a L2000 and also takes a greater range of weight than the laser 2 ( which was designed to replace the tasar because PS (UK) ltd couldn't do anything more modern than single skin glass!) I think it must be the comfiest hiking side deck of any boat!

Brilliant in light winds and a flyer when it blows, suffer under PY in medium winds when things like fireballs with traps get the edge.

The Laser 2 was originally advertised as car toppable although it still takes 2 strong blokes to lift it that high so thats me and my crew out (I sail with my Wife). It is good value, £1500 will buy a competetive one with good sails. ....also 3 sail reaching will satisfy the the thrill buds.

I personally wouldn't contemplate one without the trapeze. Why call one without a trap a "Fun", seems half the fun has been taken out.

A Taser looks like a possibility - but will they be competitive with 2 blokes on board, I'm 85kg and would struggle to find crew much under 70-80kg giving an all up weight of 155-165kg.

Whilst I agree that a Laser 2 without a trapeze seems to defeat the object, that fact precludes it from my search.

At the moment I'm leaning towards sailing a club Enterprise at Island Barn until I can convince the wife that sailing can be fun.
