When sailing at home I dont bother. Can survive for 2hrs with no additional nourishment as long as I drink something before I go out and dont have an empty stomach.
And didnt bother in the 49er as races were generally short. When at RS opens and on the water all day, used to have a banana, a lucozade sport, small bottle of water and 2 Snickers taped to front wing beam. Most important thing was to have something in your stomach before you go out, and plenty of fluids. As soon as you get in eat like crazy and replenish the fluid |

I'm similar to craiggo as I don't usually bother with food on board, but I'll normally take water with me. If it's a longer day on the water I'll take a second bottle with an isotonic drink and tape a banana to the boom. I'll then have something to eat as soon as I land.

On the Iso it was easy- could strap a dry bag with full lunch (including sarnies) to the space frame no problem. On the B14, there's rather less storage space available- can secure a couple of bottles, and tape a choccie bar or two to the inner parts of the wing struts, but beyond that and the BA/spray top pocket, there's nowhere secure. |

TT in sports nutrition shocker!! Hahahahahaha! The last serious race I did we survived on mini mars bars, skittles, battenburg, cake bars, crisps and apples. Problem was, we'd skipped breakfast and it was a 9 and a bit hour Round The Island, we had planned to get through Hurst and get some proper food going...and spookily enough no-one fancied cooking in the broach-fest that was the rest of the race... Top race preparation again then.... |

I think this is an area under valued by many sailors at all levels. 3 years ago when I decided I wanted to get better at Musto Skiff sailing I looked at all sides of the sport and nutrition was one key area of improvement. I changed my meals and my pre, during & post race eating & drinking. Performance improved, fat decreased as body weight went up 6kgs and I felt better ... and now I stick to it although weight has fallen off a bit ... |

I heard the Musto fleet at Whitstable ate their young before a race.

I'm with skiffybob, with just a slight tweak on the beer choice - would recommend Hopback Brewery Summer Lightning, or perhaps Ringwood 49er (both so good they named a boat after it).... an excellent pre-cursor to any period of high energy sailing, as long as you go in moderation....sticking under the 4 pint mark is advisable, but 6+ pints is definitely advisable for apres-sail, just to ensure adequate re-hydration afterwards

I daren't ask about pre race breakfasts...
But I'm thinking of trying the Go Bars Rick uses (between races, not for breakfast!), particularly because I want to get in that bit of protein they contain (even more essential for us veggies) to get the muscles refuelling. I also think it's key to eat as soon as possible after the race has finished. |

the same, but different...

The standard pre-race breakfast at Weston for the 12ft Skiff fleet consisted of bacon, sausage & egg bap.... ...and a bottle of STELLA!!! IT IS the only way to start the day Edited by Skiffybob |
