Ask 6 people at our Club and you get 6 different answers What tyre pressures would you guys recommend for towing a Nat 12 on a standard combi on the back of an ordinary car (Mondeo)?
I have generally gone for around 35psi and not aware of any problems. Edited by The Moo |

Yep it should say on the tyre, but 35 seems about right according to a quick google search.

I burst a trailer tyre on the motorway last year, partly because the pressures were too low. The very nice man who brought me a spare inflated both the new tyre and the old tyre to a pressure way above car tyres....I had been setting them at car tyre pressure which is apparently far too low for a trailer and hence the flat.....
(he did make me feel a bit blonde, but only in a good way ![]() I also know that I should get a spare wheel, because changing the spare tyre is not an easy job... |

the same, but different...

I think it is just the max tyre pressure that is shown on the tyre itself.

Thr trailer tyre has the maximum pressure marked on it. This depends on the strength of the tyre, which, for 8" wheels can be bought in 2 ply, 4 ply, 6 ply and 8 ply strengths. The tyre needs to be pumped up hard enough for the side walls not to bulge because its this that causes the tyre to fail. For my Hunter 19 keelboat (4 x 8" tyres) I found this to be about 75psi. For my dinghy trailer then I usually go to about 35psi but I go higher if I'm carrying a lot of gear in the boat as well. |
