A windy Medway this week. Not quite survival but very fast. I had a 17 year old experienced crew and was surprised to hear him say things like, "perhaps we should 2 sail the down wind legs". No chance of course and up went the kite - I don't think we went in on any of the gybes but we lost it on a tack and went into irons a couple of times. Downwind was wild since there was a bit of a chop and so the boat was leaping about - I do believe the crew used the toe strap (I thought they were decorative). We thrashed the Osprey even though we gave them a start. I don't think we are any faster up-wind than this lightweight carbon one but downwind we just fly and as long as we stay upright I think we have them. We of course have a lot more fun as they are going slowly through the water whilst we are traveling about twice as fast. The 4000 seems to have the measure of the 29ers too although they go faster than us they don't get the depth and we're just a bit better upwind. Great racing but very tiring being on the edge all the time, but that's why I do it. |

hmm, i think we are still miles off, yesterday i think we were tacking through at least 90 degrees, probably more, it was hard to tell with all the shifts we had. it might have something to do with a completely shagged main and the monstrous size of the jib in comparison, but beggars can't be choosers and im still playing with all the settings.

I had the 600 out on saturday and sailed the wrong course, but to be honest the course i ended up sailing was more fun than the real one, i was hardly on the trapeze at all. Sunday i was reminded why i don't sail crewed boats, the crews never turn up.

Thanks radixon. I admit it was me, but having never sailed in tidal waters with biiig waves and wind against tide before, don't think we did too badly coming second! Old boat too, 20 year old sails, and a crew I'd only sailed with properly 4 times before. Interesting sailing area, the trade-off between sailing out of the tide in slightly less wind among the moored yachts v. big tide, big waves but clear water and wind made tactics interesting. I still see the waves when I close my eyes...

The wind was there, so was the tide, but I was on a bathtub of a rescue boat. Good job I didnt have to do a lot as the conditions only meant the boat was good as a lead boat!
