Truth is that what we look like now will probably look a lot worse in 35 years time...

But here's a forum participant.

Fortunately I don't believe any photos exist of me sailing from the days when I had generous amounts of hair...

Hmm. Looks like we need to dig out our sailing snaps from the 70s and vote on who looks the most ridiculous.  Get digging...

That's one of the reasons why I haven't been around much these days. The forum is part creche, part Neandertal. I don't fit in either of those.

Thats why i said in a previous thread Y&Y need more moderators to delete the crap as its posted!!  Some people like BNS could have an admin power to remove the crap!

Anyway back to the thread!

I dunno. Whilst I am second to few in my disdain for political correctness, some of the old sexist stuff was just plain bad manners... I like having women in the sport, and if advertising of the bad old style put even a small percentage of women off the sport then I reckon we're better off without it.

..I also prefer mixed company, it provides balance. With the absence of women  some men tend to stop thinking, like a bad stag night.......and respect has nothing to do with PC.

With the greatest respect.

I think you guys have missed the point here.....

How does a woman dressed in any garment want to make a guy purchase the item??

Advertising is directed at and reflects the purchaser in the main and the user secondly (they can be different), you dont see adverts for mens clothes with a female wearing them, and thankfully you dont see adverts for womens clothes with men wearing them..

I was a student in the 1970s and believe me there were as many women on our sailing team as men then, and surprise surprise they almost all wore Javlin Jackets, it was the fashion item of the day in sailing circles, my sister still has her's somewhere, and they were a brilliant piece of very warm kit.

My point is I guess, that the advert made a lot of females wear their product, it showed that you didnt have to wear the shapeless, baggy old jumpers us guys wore, but that you could look smart, and yes sexy, when you went sailing. Take a look at any magazine today aimed at women and you will see pictures in ads far more revealing and outwardly sexy than this advert, this advert was however very much on its own in the 70s, and thats why I guess so many of us remember it.

As always there will be the few that object, and usually they are the ones that shout loudest, however advertising is aimed at the masses and accepts that a few will not like te message, but if it works on the majority it is successful.

Roger

Granted; but as those items were worn by men & women I see no reason why the ad should not feature women; different time then ...

Should it have also featured a person in a wheelchair then?

I once worked on a TV ad were we were directed to include so many minority groups in the frame that the ad ended up looking unrepresentative of everyday life.
