This thread asked why some clubs use the word 'squadron'? I think we have gone off topic - and still no satisfactory answer. Seems it is just down to the committee? I know what a 'squadron'is; I understand the naval connection, but that still does not answer the question? Why are some 'Clubs' and why are some 'squadrons'?

I'm currently a commodore, and would love my own parking space near the door, but not because I feel I need a return for helping (plenty of people do more), but because my sailing bag is heavy and I'm lazy... As for flags, when I took over as Rear Com sailing, I deleted the rule from the handbook saying that the Officer of the Day (another Naval term) had to raise the correct flag if a flag officer came into the club. As if s/he didn't have enough to do! Now I'm Commodore, I want it back...Mind you, as with most clubs, a considerable portion of the regular members have been a flag officer at some point. So, if we get rid of naval terms, the Commodore becomes the Chairman, Rear Com Sailing becomes Sailing Manager, Rear Com House becomes something equally boring and business orientated. But yes, it does sound less elitist, and we might get more people willing to take the jobs? |

Unlikely. The sport gets big media coverage and attracts corporate sponsorship in Spain because of the King's involvement at grand-prix level and the same was true in the UK in the days Prince Phillip and Princess Anne competed (at least as far as media attention went). |

If I ever get to be a Commodore (not likely Fascinating Links and articles I'm guessing here but in 1815 the Naval war with the french was pretty much over. The new war (1812-15) with the americans was fought in a completely different way, with different boats and probably with completely different sailors. There would have been loads and loads of old salts sitting around scratching their bums (I see Hardy was one of the members of the RYS), most would have had a hankering to recapture the past glory of the Nelson years, people like the old Admiral in Mary Poppins. The public feeling of triumph and patriotism then would have been completely OTT. The Navy would of been held in the highest esteem by all and sundry and any sailing institution established at that time in Britain could follow no path other than the Naval one. Also Retired Captains were probably the only people at the time with the cash, relative youth and inclination to own boats.

Our Commodore gets his own parking space (next to the club front door! Former commodores also get a special flag to fly from there boat! at our club anyway!

Is it bad of me to sugges that the Syndney Yacht Squadron adopted the name partly to ape the RYS?
I've never been a member of a club that runs a flag up the mast for the commodore, or where the flag officers (ooh, naval term!) wear silly blazers with brass buttons. Or even one where the commodore gets a good parking space- be that car or boat park! |

Anglesey, makes an interesting read, and your paragraph quote about 'squadron sailing' comes tantilisingly close to providing an answer! Although I may ask why the Royal Cork did not take up the word Squadron? |

), I wouldn't want a flag raised or my own parking place but I would like my own toilet cubicle.
....althought the reasons are understandable and entirely reasonable, maybe it's time the sport dropped it's associations with the Crown and military traditions....It might then attract a wider audience......old argument, dull and unoriginal
