Exactly, £26,000 for two good campaign boats for a few seasons works out much cheaper than at least 2 470s a season!

You won't win many friends among 505 sailors suggesting their boat for the 5 ring circus...
While its undoubtedly true that the higher tech and better engineered 505s last an awful lot longer than 470s at International level, I'm quite sure that given the extra pressures of Olympic compatition the sailors would soon come to believe that they need their sponsors/federation to buy them a new boat every year whether the difference really existed or not... |

So the reason why the Fd is coming back is a few.I you have fd it will stay conpetitive for ever.No need for a new boat ever.Once you have one it lasts. The boaty now has a carbon mast so it is making the boat easier for a mixture of weights. We are 175 and we are not the lightest and the heavy guys are still competitive. The boat does not change all the time.It is a good mixture of all aspect of 420,470,505 and most symetrical boats. You have the abilty to have al;l women crew just as easily. If you look at al the 470 crew they all are trying to loos weight etc etc ,and teh 470 means that you Haver to be x weight. The 505 is a great class , but you still need the guy at the back to be very light and the guy up frount to still be 90kgs. The reason that the FD will return is that is is a all round boat that once you have one you wont need to keep up with the development as it is in place. It has been a OC boat before so its a easy return. With all RYAs .YA USAYA etc there is aways goiing to be issues with which class to support. As a sailor you need just decide what sort of sailor yo want to be.There is only 1 boat per counrty in the Oc so the % is very low unless you are extreamly talented. Its more inportant to have a few well supported class rather than a whole heap of builder pushed classes. Personally I think the Fd will make a come back as originally when these boats that we are talking about were first designed it won the original spot. |

I don't really catch your point. FD may last really long so as the 505, int14 ... but you will always find people who will develop faster boats that everybody will need to follow to win. If I remember a little the class story, there use to be wood hulls, then epoxy and at least carbon/kevlar. This year you have adapted carbon masts. Do you really think that boats last so long ? I think at the moment FD class is stable because it is asleep |

The main reason the development in the FD class happened in the first place was because of the pressure of Olympic competition, coupled with the fact that the class rules were deliberately formulated to encourage experimentation and development. I suspect the hull shape, foils etc have now stabilised, and would change very little no matter how much time and money was thrown at a campaign. I have to agree with Dinghysolutions, a modern FD has an INDEFINITE competitive life. I can't think of a single epoxy/kevlar boat since 1990 that could honestly be said to be slow or incapable of winning a Worlds. The carbon mast will remove the requirement for a gorrilla on the wire, while still allowing the gorrillas to be competitive. Aside from all that, it's just an awesome boat to sail! Nothing can touch it upwind in 15-20 knots and waves. The first time you sheet on, get the crew on the wire and feel the horsepower kick in, you're hooked! I'm 85 kg, and crew for my wife, who is a lot less (wouldn't be gentlemanly to reveal the figure, but less than 75% of my weight!), and there are several other mixed crews in UK. I'm personally not convinced the Olympics would be good for the class, but I admit the case is pretty strong. Either way, I've been sailing FD for 12 years now, and hope to still be sailing the same boat in 12 years time. Give it a try - you'll love it. Rides can be arranged. Neil |

Sorry I didn't want to be rude. It's probably because I'm coming with a french eye on a class who sails on classic regattas with 6M JI ... I'm pretty convinced there isn"t such a nice boat upwind except maybe the Star. I also glancing at her when I met some on water but for an olympic classes I would rather like to see boats who have their story to make than behinf them. I don't think it would be a good idea to have only overpowered dinghies but a compromised can be done and boats likes RS800 or L4000 could fit in. |
