Still a lot of sail on the boat though.... But Carbon masts will make an already really fast boat go faster. Isn't she the fastest symmetrical boat around? Might be nice to see her get that place.

Seen that done before, but with assymetric too. I think it would spoil the characteristics of an already nice boat. Dinghysolutions, is the new rig developed similar to the skiff type rigs, where the top section responds to gusts, etc, almost making the rig self-adjusting, depending on the conditions?

The assymetric twin-wire Dutchman, was a prototype which went forward as an option when the 49er was selected. Not too many people rated it next to the likes of the Boss, the Int 14, 5000 and obviously the 49er. Not because the FD is a bad boat, just because it was trying to do something which the other boats were purely designed to do. Hence the reason that I don't think the original design should be vastly modified because it will border on the boat breaking its design limitations and ruining the way it sails overall.

the cst stick we are using is developed with sll their skiff background.THe mast no now responds by pushing the boat forward instead of loading up.At a world title we get 100 boats at our nationals in Aussie we get 30 boats ,once a month for our state sailing we get 10 boats, You will find that this boat now is alot easier to handle .We are 175 kg total with 85 on the wire and we are the fastest boat in breeze here in Aussie and in euorpe the number 1 in the world did not hold us. No need to be heavy to be fast.Paul Elstrom said that on any dinghy that has a crew on the wire ,If the skipper needs to hike then the boat is not tuned porperly. With the external track we can put a carbon track or a plastic track or a f'glass one on.This allows us to control the stiff ness of the tip with out the expense of 2 rigs etc etc |

sounds cool, im not sure i understood all of that last bit exactly but i wasnt expecting to. I jsut want to say that its good thing that the FD is coming back they used to be sailed a lot in England but have got pushed aside by new and better (debatable) boats. My only sad thought is what will happen to the 470 and 420 classes, the 470 class isnt that big and the 420 is only big as its a youthstepping stone to the 470 (olympic class)

Although the FD sounds a good idea, what stepping stones do we have towards it within our youth classes. If we replace the 470 with the 505, we'd have a good route up through the youth classes. At the same time we could have the route of 420-470-505-FD. The 505 could be the training boat for the FD, but it does seem a lot of boats to go through as a Youth.

yeah that would be realy expensive and you would loose peopple all the way up. couldnt you just keep the 420 (then go to) 505 - FD or how hard is it to go striaght to 505 from say a cadet, or mirror (the first steps on the ladder)
