While racing in a very mixed fleet today we rounded a windward mark alongside another boat and set off down a reach to the next mark.  We were in an assymetric and to leeward of the other boat which was a Phantom. We had our kite launched and began to head up to power up, luffing the Phantom who called us to "sail our proper course". We replied that as an assymetric boat it was our proper course.

What is correct here?

You are.

When, owing to a difference of opinion about a leeward boat’s proper course, two boats on the same tack converge, the windward boat must keep clear. There can be more than one proper course.

100% agree

Been having these arguments for years sailing cats.  Proper course is any course you can JUSTIFY as getting you to the next mark quickest.

Surely when racing you can sail what ever course you like providing you are doing so within the rules, ie windward/leeward etc etc.

So you can pull your kite up if you wish and he has to get out the way whatever. Unless you were behind him to begin with then the fastest boat rule comes in. you said you were next to him and as he was to windward you can do what you like!

I'd love to hear the opinion of the Phantom sailor ! I'm not for one moment suggesting that Dopamine's account is anything but 100% accurate - but then again......

LOL LOL LOL
