You only find friends in the circles you move in, who goes to a strange place to make friends? I have caravan friends and kayaking friends and cycling friends, none of them know the friends from the other groups. Can't see how this is a problem or cliquey.

So they’ll wait for the sailor to come ashore, go up to this stranger and be convinced to buy a Laser 2000, keep it in a garage, tow it to the water, rig it up, launch it without any cover, learn without any real guidance, then pack up and tow it home? That doesn’t sound the best future for the sport! £250 to knock down those barriers to entry seem a bargain to me - and you get a access to a loo, shower, food, beer and first aid kit.

Yes that's my experience too. That works well where there are people around the club who are polite and welcoming. My club's pretty good like that, and we've usually got some friendly folk around that go out of their way to talk to potential newbs and offer them rides etc. But I've been to clubs that aren't like that at all, and that includes some big name clubs too.

Everyone as it happens. Every place you've ever been was strange initially. When I was helping out with new members when teaching the adult 1&2 it was very clear that most of them were looking for new friends and even partners and lets face it there's nowt so strange as a sailing club. Human contact which provides stimulation and feedback is a human need essential for a healthy life. How we structure that contact varies......in this case sailing is the structure. |

Yes you are right, didn't word it very well. Caravanners have a saying 'There are no strangers, only friends we haven't met yet'.

There is only so much hand holding and nurturing a club can do. It is a two way street, yes of course make sailing as accessible as possible both socially and physically. HOWEVER, by it's very nature sailing does require a level of natural determination and self reliance. As ever, balance and simply talking to people is vital.

Exactly. I might do some ad hoc racing with a few people I know who also have Lasers. We're in the same league, so we'll keep an eye on one another if something breaks. Not sure we'd bother if it was light wind. What are we supposed to do if someone we've never met before turns up? Are we taking responsibility? What if they're under 18? And how does it work if they've got a Solo or a Topper? Are people really going to invest £1000 in a boat on the vague promise of 'there's sometimes 3 blokes out on a Friday evening'? Likewise, I probably wouldn't put my time or money into a club which wasn't regularly putting a suitable fleet on the water. A sailing person who moves to an area will probably not choose a failing club if there's an active club which ticks the boxes nearby.

There's a lot of people in sailing clubs whose social needs are provided for by the club rather than the sailing.

Indeed. Anecdotally, I was told that a member of a prominent and renowned south coast club was turned away from the gate by the jobsworth because the vacant parking spaces were ‘for those who want to have Sunday lunch’. Never mind those who want to go sailing and turn up at 9 with kit to lug, have to look after those in blazers who swan in at 12.30 for gin.

Absolutely, most things with adults needs to be a two way street, reciprocal or at least an equal trade. and SC's need to understand and decide what needs they are willing to provide for and for whom they are going to do it. At the moment the "Whom" looks like a closed shop catering for (as I said earlier) White, Middle Class, Paternalistic, imperialist, vaguely military, straight people. And balance is essential......But ........I would think and I think a vast number of others also think that the institution of sailing is on an extreme. It is not unbiased, neutral but rather partisan. On the water I hope we are all equal but "on the water" element is only one part of what SC's and human beings do. It looks like an anachronism. Most of these people aren't indifferent to sailing, they actively dislike what they see. Clubs vary in this respect, mine being fairly informal and easy going, I'm fortunate and it keeps me sailing. Some clubs I visit though turn my stomach with their insecure, scared, partisan attitudes. On this forum I'm pretty much on my own with my views (my background gives me thick skin) but with regard to the general public who doesn't sail I am not alone.
