I think the fact the events are being cancelled show that preparations AREN’T as extensive as people would like. Most nationals/worlds I’ve been to are reliant on local volunteers giving up their time to run the events. It’s highly likely that these local volunteers aren’t comfortable with potentially having to assist in a rescue, or removing boats and trollies off beaches, and generally get close to other people who may be asymptotic.
That’s your view, but I can tell you that the people I’ve spoken to where I live, and on local social media groups don’t want visitors down yet. The locals who would help run events know this, that may be another reason why events are being cancelled as the clubs don’t want any grief. |

The people I know in Cornwall who arent in the tourism sector quite frankly want all the grockles to sling their hook - the NHS just isn't geared-up down there to deal with an influx or a Covid spike from visitors.
That said, my inlaws are merrily on their way down in a couple of weeks - oblivious to these reasonable warnings. Ironically, they struggled to get accommodation too.... unsurprising given the number of morons who would listen to Esther McVey.... Edited by turnturtle - 05 Aug 20 at 2:32pm |

I’m not saying it’s right or not, (certainly no more than quoting Radio Exe as an authority on pandemic statistics), I’m trying to give my experience of how people in Cornwall feel about visitors at the moment, and why this may have an effect on whether folk want to volunteer to hold events for visiting sailors.

Radio Exe was reporting government statistics, which you see on the government website. I quoted it, as funnily enough it's mostly local news that reports on local trends.
I think there is a league of difference between that and the muddled thinking I see in local facebook groups. |

You’re right there, but I think most rational people are able to determine who’s chatting sh*te, and who aren’t. Though on this subject, whether locals are happy to see the tourists down or not, it’s pretty straight forward and unambiguous.

I presume that none of us would criticise a fellow Class member for making the personal decision to not attend a major event due to Covid concerns?
So why is it that individuals (or collectively, Clubs) are seemingly being criticised for doing the same? Sure - it's a shame that these Champs have been cancelled, but really.... we only go to these venues at their invitation as guests, so if for whatever reason they decide that in the current situation they don't feel that it's appropriate to host, then that decision (that may directly affect the Club finances, so hasn't been taken lightly) should be respected. 2nd guessing these decisions, that will have been pondered over for literally hours by Ctte's, and critiquing them on public chat boards just smacks of entitlement IMHO.

Exactly, the clubs don’t want to cancel champs, opens, etc., often these events are what sustain small coastal clubs financially. But between upsetting their neighbours, and struggling to find volunteers, its so difficult for clubs to get back to normal. Personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable about staying away as a paying guest at the moment, you’re putting a lot of faith in the property cleaner’ skills, and the previous occupants honesty/hygiene.

I would expect any club committee to put the concerns, and health, of their members at the top of considerations about going ahead with an open meeeting under current circumstances. And putting on a Nationals or Open takes a lot of input from local members volunteering to help with onshore marshalling, food, drink, safety and committtee boats. All of those are likely to potentially be exposed to visitors, many from areas where infection rates may be much higher.
It may well be the case that the potential level of risk is over estimated by many, but that is in many ways irrelevant. If those are the concerns of the committee and members then there is no way a club could sensibly go ahead. And whatever the underlying truth turns out to be there have been indications of rising infection rates in Devon, and the SW, which is no surprise to anyone living here if you look at recent traffic flows on the A38. And it would be more surprising if the influx from more infected areas did not lead to a local rise in infections rather than the other way round. |
