The debate isn't
"Are you allowed organised events" The debate is basically "Is racing a gathering of more than 6 people?" To me the conflicting guidance is the "return to competitive sport" guidelines. That seems to have allowed 22 guys, a ball, 2 managers, some subs, and at least 3 officials to gather for 90 minutes. The first footy match being on Wednesday (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53005324). Nothing in that guidance says you must be a multi-million pound professional. Definitely not socially distanced. |

The name did make me wince.
For what it's worth, the angler committee is self appointed by three or four blokes, only one of which still posts. He's fighting a battle where there is none. The club don't have a issue with anglers. But out of decency ask them to avoid launching times for obvious hook-casting issues. What the club has an issue with is people tailgating through barriers, parking on private land. Blocking access to the lifeboats. Damaging club property. People wandering through the boat park and about the site (not beach), using the facilities etc. You'll notice their page has very little traction, despite a large angling community. That's because most are sensible and know the score. One or two comment on their posts, including boasting about tailgating through barriers and using their blue badge to park on double yellows. It's interesting that the biggest response a post has ever got is from the sailing community!
Personally, I fail to see that I am gathered (with regard to the regulation and their purpose) in a sailing race and am therefore happy to do so. I feel no more gathered by racing in the same area than cruising in the same area. I can see others might feel differently and respect their decision. |

Read the government documents. You always have been allowed organised events. The myth that you can’t has spread but it is a myth.

I don't usually post comments with a political dimension on here for obvious reasons. However it's hard to discuss the topic "Is Racing Allowed" without reference to the current political situation, so I'll make an exception for once. I think it's clear that the government has totally lost control of the lockdown. There's no longer a UK approach to the lockdown, with different rules being followed in each country. For example, social distancing rules are different in England to Wales, and school reopenings are different too. The advice from the UK government on the recent London protests was ignored, and piles and piles of shoppers were ignoring social distancing today. We probably shouldn't be too surprised, as if the governments chief advisor can ignore the lockdown why shouldn't the rest of us ? I also think that dinghy sailors are usually pretty conservative, with a small "c", and tend to be law abiding types. But assuming we take sensible precautions like not using the clubhouse, maintaining social distancing when we're ashore and being sensible when we sail I can't see we're doing any harm so why should we listen to those idiots in government any more ?

Well join a fishing forum then. Tells you everything that you care more about what one fisherman on a crusade thinks than any actual care for sailing or racing.

With the greatest of respect to them, I doubt anyone could care less. Now, the reaction of the Hayling Island Recreational Fishing group - that’s interesting! |
