Hi chic

You'll have our IRC and sail measurements from the certificate copy I posted a bit back. We're changing our configuration slightly with our new sails coming this season and I'll post here how that changes things.

Out our club, most of our racing is IRC (thank god). However we have a few events that the club encourages non-IRC boats to compete in and we use a "Club Handicap" which is essentially PY, though not in-name.

Upstart rates 888. The two races we did under club handicap this year are linked here (http://www.hpyc.com/race07/ny08.htm) and here (http://www.hpyc.com/race07/boxingday07.htm). They were boxing day and new years day - hence the low turnouts!

Tying the ratings to boat designs (and getting a few from other races we didn't do)

Projection 762 - 888

Grand Soleil 40 - 830

Cork 1720 - 844

Sunfast 37 - 869

Dehler 33 - 874

X332 - 863 / 870

Aphrodite 101 - 924

Contessa 33 - 940

To try and answer your other questions - fleets generally small for PY style racing as all major events run under IRC. Club is Haven Ports Yacht Club.

Hope that's some use, give me a shout if you need any more info

I know I've been rambling on about PY handicaps for the Projection for a while but now it gets serious!

If I'm to appeal our current handicap of 873 set by the Forth Yacht Clubs Association (FYCA) I need to do it in the next two weeks or so. It may affect other Projection owners racing on PY because the FYCA have a huge handicap database and are significant contributors to the setting of RYA keelboat handicaps!

We now have our own performance data from over 50 starts and 2000 miles of racing from the 2007 season (once the boat was in the water we didn't miss a single race) and by the end of the season had achieved 884. In order to appeal I'd be really grateful for handicapping 'evidence' from other Projection owners in the form of:

  • IRC figures (I already have existing ones from the forum) but preferably PY handicaps, plus sail configuration/ sail area if you know it
  • Proposed changes to PY handicaps for next season
  • Fleet sizes
  • Makeup of fleet, ie what types of boats are you competing against
  • Sailing Club, owner's name and boat name

If you prefer to PM me that's fine, but I think much of this info could be interesting/ useful for all of us.

Cheers!  Chic

I would be kidding you if I said we had a production line but given enough lead time we could produce a 762. We will have to replace the demonstrator before too long. A budget figure for a new boat all-in and ready to race would be approx £28,000 - £30,000. We do have a Polish manufacturer  prepared to produce them depending on orders but none produced by them as yet.

Replacement components and repairs can be arranged through Rowan Yacht Services.

So you can get a new 762 if you want one !  ?

errr.. price ?

News to me ,last story I heard was of possible Polish production .

I fitted a J80 pulpit last Friday , reasonably easy , 2 extra holes ,and  a little brute force to align .

Hi Chic

No orders for 762s at the moment but a new version of the 920 may appear before too long!

Brian,

I'm glad to see that you're still monitoring the P762 thread!

Thanks for the info and phone numbers re bearings, I shall give Colin Ryan a call.

Out of curiosity (I'm sure I'm not the only one), are we going to see any baby projections in the coming months, or are they only built to order?

Regards, Chic

Colin Ryan at Rowan Yacht Services can provide ( and fit if necessary ) replacement rudder bearings if you can't obtain elsewhere. tel 01634 256691 mob 07885 716087.

Not sure I was the one that didn't reply to Chic but if so - many apologies!

I replaced Zulu's rudder bearings the year before last. After dropping the rudder both bearings came out fairly easily with a large hammer and a wooden drift. The upper bearing has to be pushed up from below. I measured them up and a local light engineering shop turned up copies from solid Delrin which went straight back in again without any trouble. They still have no play at all. The  whole thing cost about 40 quid.

Doug,

I tried the thicker washer trick last season. The real problem with this is finding a washer of the required thickness to eliminate the slack BUT without lifting the rudder to excess, which leads to the top edge binding on the bottom of the boat when helm is applied.

You might guess that I failed in my attempt!

IMHO Stainless steel Shimming is what is needed under the original washer, maybe only 1-1.5mm thick....

More worrying was the fact that after anti fouling the rudder blade I spotted a weep of water coming from the leading edge of the blade.....resulting in investigative dremmelling and a week of drying and remeadial filling and refairing..I must have cured it as there is no sign of any problem now.

My rudder bearings were replaced before I got Her , however I dropped the rudder last week as the tiller alignment is about 5 degs out which is a real pain at times .
The shaft and nylon bearings are tapered , there is a large nylon washer below tiller fitting , I reckon if the washer was a little thicker it may well pull the shaft up slightly and remove the free play ....  ?       Poss worth a try anyway  .
I was amazed  at how heavy  the rudder is , there  must be a lot of steel frame  inside or something .

Doug .
