Not watching them now, not on my radar since I sold the Alto, which interestingly I hear has also upped a few points which basically proves my point back then, the Osprey/Alto relationship was well out of scew. I'm now living in a relatively PY free world, there are four Solutions to race against and Lasers of course and on the sea I have yet to sail the Farr to what I would call it's handicap whatever that will eventually end up at anyway, so i can't really be that PY sensitive. It is such a shame though that such a potentially wonderful resource that could be so positive for the sport is in the hands of people so unenlightened. |

Keep up iGRF; Ospreys have been knocked down since 944, without checking I think now 928.

It was the first year I really got involved in dinghy racing and started to pay attention to such things 2004 was it? Ospreys? Can anyone catch them on 944 is it? They are a bit of a Bandito as I recall, racing them in the Alto off 912 and they've been lipsticked, so it doesn't surprise me they'd beat Lasers on open water, just like the Hornet another bandit. Silverlode - That's just the different characteristics of the boats. Hiking singlehanders generally hit top upwind speed before being overpowered whereas something like a trapeze boat planing upwind just gets faster and faster. I think the sweet spot for the Laser is around a F3 where they are really quick to pop onto the plane and accelerate while other boats are not yet planing.
While a single number isn't perfect it is workable and we all have to accept that some boats are harder to sail to PY than others and all boats will have sweet spot for course, wind, sea etc

Interesting. Tenby is pretty open water with waves when it is windy but the Lasers can't touch the Ospreys in most conditions. Of course that might just be down to crew skill.
We haven't adjusted away from the RYA figures yet but I would be interested to know how the figure of 1078 for the Laser was arrived at - by my reckoning the "official" Laser PY hasn't been that low since 2009. Was the winner of your series using a carbon topmast? If so perhaps it should be treated as a separate class rather than adjusting the yardstick of the lasers with the original rig. |

There must be enough data submitted from clubs of all types to be able to give a big lake/small lake/coastal PY now, rather than than just overall.
Working in Data Science I would love to get my hands on the PY Data. It would be awesome!!

So in effect a notional PY of 1000 (unless you take their finishing place out completely).

Just don't give a PY at all for a few races. Then compare timings and positions in reverse. If you have good standard Laser results for the person sailing, set the new yardstick to reflect those results. No need to be easy or punitive, just methodical.

How would you do that though? The 8 is likely to be faster than the Rooster 8.1.
Someone rocks up with one, you estimate their PY, they win everything and that then upsets the rest of the club. Better to give a punitive PY until you have some data in the system and then review it after a month of 2 (as long as there have been a few races and you can compare to the persons previous results). |
