Because I don't believe anyone knows what the number should be - hence the problem! On the Moth forum and the Moth website you'll see suggestions for anything from 695 to 900... The latter comes from a chap who suggests that as most learner foiler sailors spend half the race upside down the handicap should allow for that. I don't believe that's *quite* the intention of the scheme... The answer, and the same goes for every class without a number they like, is for the sailors to do as much handicap racing at their clubs as possible and make sure that the club sends a PY return in. It might help if Class associations of boats that have changed radically were to publish their best guess of what the number should be should they have any meaningful data (which admittedly most don't). The Canoe class, for instance took some timings at the recent worlds, and I think we'll be suggesting that the new 50kg box rule Canoes have a PY of 881 against 905 for the one design hull 83kg Canoe. |

Sory guys, got a nasty attack of bit torrent on the LAN at home so have been writing IP filters... The 4 classes that had particularly good average placings (of those with more than 5 starters) were International 14, Solo, Lark, Firefly. Ove the last few years the top ones have been 2.4m, National 12, International 14, Solo, Europe. What we don't know of course are cultural issues, ie which classes tend to send a hot fleet. I suspect, for instance, that not-quite-top-of-the-fleet QM sailors are more likely to do the event than not-quite-top-of-the-fleet Tyneside sailors, so classes with a lot of boats at QM might appear proportionally low down, and classes where only the hot boys travel are well up... That;s why I wouldn't draw many conclusions from a single event, or event two events on similar water. Edited by JimC |
