Finn hulls seem to stay competitive for more than 20 years so the cost of being fast in a Finn is probably no more than many modern classes of single hander.  It's true that the trickle through of gear from the squad/youth sailors will end but there will continue to be those who are selling used gear when upgrading to new.  We have more than 20 Finns at one of my clubs and a growing fleet at my other club, currently 9 boats. There's still regular requests for used boats, worldwide, with our used Finn page being one of the most visited pages on our website although there's not much on the page currently.

As for the free pumping I, personally, would like to see an end to it after 2020 as it would level the playing field and, IMO, make the Finn attractive to a wider audience. I do understand the added dynamics of air rowing but think that this extreme option is not necessary for exciting and competitive racing in a Finn.

Generally speaking, the Finn probably serves as a better club boat between events too..... something which gets ahead of the Laser pack is going to be less frustrating than something that lags behind.... no matter how nice it is to sail.

There is an overlap - some folk sail both

The Finn masters numbers are in a different league however

Also lots of the Finn helms are too big firm an OK

The Finn kit will have to become cheaper though

Without the Olympic kudos and steady supply of used kit, is the Finn now competing more closely with the OK? The OK is a classy bit of kit with a good international scene, and presumably cheaper than a Finn. Probably also a better fit for most bodies.

Personally I like the option to pump (and it is an option). All the Finn events have overall awards plus age groups (Masters 40-49, Grand Masters 50-59, Great Grand Mastes60-69, Legends 70-79 and Super-Legends 80+) and the Class encourages and rewards all of them.
This means that your racing in your category as well as overall, so your competitors have similar physical abilities to yourself, though this year, aged 49 I’ve been battling with the super fit 40 year olds😜

Largest catagory in the UK Fleet is the Grand Masters, followed by the Great Grand Masters, so the pumping doesn’t seem to put many off!

And as said, the trickle-down of good used kit will be sorely missed

Yes

The pumping rule (as ‘good’ as it has been for the youth and in an attempt to attract more youth) does mean that races when the pumping flag is up become races for two fleets (the youth and the masters)

This has put off some very good sailors

For many of us however it’s been fantastic to watch the younger athletes, learn from them, buy their used kit etc

Well given the price point of the boat, the typical sailor and it’s position as the premier masters class for the cognitive as well as physical game of sailboat racing, it would surely make sense for the class to consult its membership over the free pumping rules.

When I say 'fine', it's obviously dependent on iGRF not going back on his Finn opinions, actually sailing one and thus killing the Class off.

There may well be some who come back/into the class

Perhaps the pumping should also be banned now ? That may get even more back ?

When the CEO doesn’t even sail, I doubt there’s much that motivates World Sailing to go to the actual effort to subvert due process with illicit voting  .... definite cock up!

Cock up or conspiracy? I wonder if someone simply put the wrong labels on and shuffled the names. Easily done. The other good cockup is sorting the spreadsheet and not including all the columns. No doubt we shall see although of course if it was that sort of cockup the conspiracy theorists won't believe it...
