interestingly there's one market which decathlon studiously avoid, however i think their fear or external brands might be factor ...
dance stuff ... dance wear and more particularly Pointe shoes is where the local shop with a skilled fitter/ technician always wins out ... |

That would require a dinghy supplier to carry lots of stock, drop ship the boats to the end user for which Halfords take the money, then wait 90 - 120 days to be paid. They are a sh*t company to deal with, trust me no dinghy outfit could finance it, I used to sell them cycles, complete ball-ache by the time you've financed the 180 day cycle you make bugger all. |

I try where possible to support small retailers, for instance I use small DIY shop by me for fixings and paint etc, but Halfords have given a local cyclist with skills a good job in his chosen sport.
I believe Halfords used to retail 'Skipper' sailing dinghies ? Would be a good platform for dinghy sailing particularily if they employed someone with relevant skills, point potential customers to local RYA sailing centres.

Unfortunately one man band bike shops are up against Halfords and Decathlon, not sure wether Decathlon have mechanics ? But the Halfords a short ride from me has a good bike mechanic who is a cyclist himself so is engaged with the sport.

We have four local bike shops, a wheel builder and a large branch of Evans within 5/10 mins ride from home. What used to be, probably, the biggest in terms of turnover and certainly the longest established, was bought by a father and son team. They tried to take it upmarket by not doing the 'bread and butter' stuff the previous owners did and just offering the high end too). They now only open by appointment... |

We all can make choices, if something in your opinion is too expensive, you can buy something else, since if there is loads of profit to be made you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will undercut them.
Obviously this is not always the case with OEM classes, but there is the joy of the traditional classes, like the Solo, where a complete mast can be pretty much purchased for the price of a Laser topmast. The real problem, particularly for those involved in making product in the non-OEM classes is that the stuff is too good ... I can’t remember when I last had to buy a cleat or a block or rope from a chandler. And Mylar fully battened sails have two or three full on seasons in them before they lose their shape. With clothing you also have choices, you don’t have to buy Zhik, there are plenty of “me to” alternatives at a fraction of the price. However in Zhik’s defence, it is really well considered and designed kit and has quite a lot to do with why I sail every weekend, rain or shine. It is also way cheaper than Ski kit which I only wear for a week each year.

I dont quite know what your point is. "Successful businessman in huge bank balance shocker" I haven't dealt much with Marlow, but I know the Marine wing of English Braids isn't huge relative to what they do. Most of their business is done in industry. I'd expect Marlow to be the same. One thing is certain - if he does own half of Gloucester airport it wasnt accomplished by selling you or I 50m of sprint line every 5 years and a 15m main halyard once a season. The same goes for Allen and Harken who make basically the same fittings for a myriad of other purposes that are far more profitable than selling 3 or 4 of them to us maybe one a year. If they didn't do this I dread to think what the prices would be, they'd never recover the tooling cost without the volume.

Just to put into perspective the price Selden want for Mast block, follow link to a Selden Gnav boom end, substantially more involved.
