Interesting one there Zippy. Having worked for a rope manufacturer and seen the margin that is put onto rope it is outrageous.
What highlights this is when Kingfisher import it, put their stickers on the reel and then are still much cheaper than Marlow to the chandleries. Sometimes by 50% and then the retailers double the price, add VAT and the end user pays it. Enormous mark ups.

Finn sail material is circa £100 (As quoted by a different sailmaker), the development is done by the sailors/coaches and then they sell for about £1500 and last for 1 week before they shrink!

Sorry TT but it's hard to see Laser as being better in any of those aspects than the windsurfing manufacturers. And, regardless of R&D I still think a 2 metre piece of simple CF tube shouldn't cost over £500......

Most windsurf masts are produced in OEM sweatshops to whatever design spec, and tolerance, the brand are prepared to pay for.  Hence why third parties like Unifiber and Amex can undercut the Norths, Prydes and Severnes of the windsurf world.

Their R&D aims are completely different from the Laser- and none of them, except maybe Pryde, are putting anything back in to a sporting infrastructure.   Even North, which was only ever a German company (behind Fanatic) were licensing the name of the sailing brand we know.... that’s come to an end now, AIUI, Duotone is the same tech with a different sticker on the OEM mast product.

TBF the windsurfing mast guys do the same thing and can sell theirs (which are longer tapered sections with a non-constant wall thickness) for significantly less money. Even if you assume they use lighter construction so less material the, typically, 4.6m length will offset the cost saving even without the more complex construction. Even if they have a copied the bend characteristics of the ally mast they are still selling a parallel sided constant wall thickness tube, and selling enough for the economies of scale to kick in to a certain extent at least. But, like I said, it's the price we pay for sailing SMOD.

Will work out cheaper over time because it outlasts the ally top section.

I understand they spent some considerable time developing a layup that would give the closest possible match to the characteristics of the metal tube. So not just a custom manufacture, but also a lot of R&D to pay for.

And then factor in development costs especially in the OD classes where multiple sailmakers are permitted and the sail really can make a big difference.

Which makes it sound very cheap compared to a Laser top section. And £1684 for a complete mast looks very reasonable compared to others (Blaze £998, Phantom £1199, Merlin £2233).

edit :- Sorry, that's Blaze £1998 and Phantom £2199....
