There is a general trend in western societies towards dematerialisation.

For example the size and number of IT devices that are now redundant and their functions well handled by the mobile phone.

Many young people no longer drive. In a few years car ownership will start to reduce as electric and self driving technologies come in. Renting/leasing will/is increasing.

The level of ownership of large heavy complex personal equipment is going to reduce.

We are starting to see a move to additive manufacture and personalisation in some areas.

The dinghy boom was reliant on infrastructure for large complex bits of personal sporting equipment. This is now less available and so old ideas of building boats and even having boats as we know it are slowly passing.

The growth of very sophisticated inflatable Sups shows one way forward, light, personal, volume appropriate to modern living, accessible in cost and skill.

All ideas/products have an adoption curve, dinghy sailing has reached the top and is on the downward slope, probably with a few plateaus but over the next 50 yrs I would expect it to show  a general decline. Other sports will take over. At the moment it is Sup.

The solution is to enjoy the ride, be flexible, develop new skills.

Be realistic.
As a competitive 'sport' SUP is hardly happening.
The actual competition side of it seems to be less people x races than Enterprises, let alone dinghy sailing as a whole.
Fair enough lots of people have bought them as beach toys, some have them as personal fitness things, a bit like loads of people have bikes or rowing machines without ever getting involved in actual competition.
Or is every other UK launching site hectic with SUP racing or SUP surf competitions apart from where I am?

That may just be a brilliant idea,  combination of 'airfix' and West System Epoxy' and you have an easily accessible construction system that can produce proper boats.....

Hardly - most people I know with SUP boards have zero Interest in it becoming a competitive sport for them

That's possibly true of dinghy sailors and definitely the case with those who sail keelboats, windsurfers and kiteboards.

Sorry TT, was trolling.
Sam, I think a Mirror kit from Trident is about a grand, so a cheap entry level sailable new boat.

£1125 and that is a lot of boat for the money, if less so for the effort involved  Wink But, if you add glue, paint and rig it's getting close to 3£k (and considerably more with a kite and the full spec epoxy build kit).

a PD Racer would probably cost less the a couple of hundred quid though (and possibly much less using 'recycled' materials).

No worries - I was only riled by the sport bit- the juxtaposition of naff and trendy still takes some getting used to... a bit like the D-Zero I guess.

One of our older members said when the Mirror started they were a 'Bloody nuisance' sailing anywhere and everywhere, much like open water swimmers today.

Today, people want an instant fix to their activity needs, and building a boat from a kit, however laudable and popular it was in the past (and I count myself in that group), it is unlikely to appeal to todays generation. Sadly.
