You will undoubtedly learn faster and better if you are taught rather than self made (unless a genius) but the key to any activity has to be to get them to want to come back next time. There has to be something to look forward to.

Agree David Yacht, nail head.
![]() Ironically returning to SUP, what have I in my inbox this morning? A SUP company claiming to be the first to calculate a Stability chart, then a Glide capability index. Just the sort of thing that would be useful for dinghys marketing spin it might be, but it serves as a useful categorisation of their products and to a casual observer quite logical and rational. Anything that de mystifies a product removes one more sales obstacle to entrance to the sport or pursuit and if there is one thing is lark needs more than ever is demystification there is so so much bollox even amongst those who are well into the game. Spreader settings springs to mind immediately as just one example. Edited by iGRF - 28 Sep 18 at 11:43am |

Who is it from? ... I want one; should I be contacting Mr T? I love it when a sport becomes technical, next thing it will disappear up its own a**e, usually about the time I get on board

Starboard have been doing that kind of thing for a while - bar charts showing suitability against criteria, e.g. wave vs cruising or race use, stability vs glide etc
They are sort of useful, but the best advice I have had is buy the longest one you realistically store /transport for flat water usage. Volume is good for waves - don’t chase low volume like some windsurf wannabe from the late 80’s Width - proportional to shoulder width... too narrow is unstable, thus slower, despite what it says on the tin! If you’re looking for a one board does it all, 10’-11’ is your friend. Inflatables are getting far far better, however a solid is still superior! |

Kona a brand I've flirted with on and off.
Here lets see if it cut and pastes What is stability? Kona has become the first company in the industry to analyze one of the most important parameters within stand-up paddling. Stability has a major impact in the choice of board and we want the customer to find the right board easier than ever before. When introducing the stability number the customer can easily compare boards and find the right one for their ability and needs. Stability is the ability of the board to resist heeling and capsize. A board with low stability makes it more challenging to stand on, but often carries some performance benefits. A board with High stability makes paddling easier, but sometimes slower less efficient. ![]() What is glide? Not only have we introduced a way to compare boards easily, we have also made a resistance analysis to find the glide of each board. Glide is a term we use to talk about the ease of paddling. The higher the glide number the easier the board is to paddle and vs versa. Why is Glide Important? The glide number is a ratio of volume to length and is important because this helps to choose which board is right together with your stability number. The longest narrowest boards have the highest glide ability’s. How do we calculate Glide ? Using 3D models of our boards and Naval Architect computer analysis methods, we calculate the glide number. This is then used to optimize designs make changes in volume distributions, lengths, widths and rocker lines. ![]() And no I'm not intending to start selling SUPs again can't sell something I don't believe in just for money. Joachim getting all sciencey in his old age is he? Damn, I always loved his more free spirited, back to the roots approach personally. His new raceboards look nice though!

Stability is a well understood nav arch quantity ie you can assign a value, the transverse meta centric height that characterises the initial transverse stability of a hull very nicely.
“Glide” is more of a subjective quantity. I guess you could make a decent engineering estimate of a hull drag from its parameters perhaps regressed against physical measurements, for a given displacement. From that perhaps estimate distance travelled on single impulse ie paddle stroke. In fact f@ck it ballast them up and give each prototype a shove of a known magnitude in a swimming pool and measure it. |

Ah but that assumes pressure is applied equally between the feet and/or the hull shape benefits from being paddles flat- most have very pronounced tunnel systems at the performance end of the spectrum, and tail shape is also very important if you are ‘gliding’ down rollers on a downwinder... anyway, SUP (that horrendously inefficient but lovely way to spend time on the water) disappearing up it’s own arse with pseudo science with limited real world impact, well, as Grumpf would say, you couldn’t make it up!!!
