Half the dinghy people I've spoken to don't have the first idea about what's going on with their rigs either, takes a windsurfer to truly understand.

Yawn, run us through setting up the jib slot, spreader deflection and rig tension on your beach toy again ...

LOL You mean read loads of marketing crap in boards, then buy the one with most garish design and pull the down-haul on as tight as they can?

I'm not very familiar with Julian's CV, but I'm not sure he ever strayed very far from the water, although his Linkedin page suggests he spent a good number of years in Industrial design and Business management at University of Technology, Sydney and I believe he did placements in industrial design at some American companies.
Elder brother Mark is I believe a very high powered civil engineer.

(carbon mast) it made no other difference to performance. Costwise it is a £889 upgrade over the M7 and makes a ready to tow away Blaze around £13.5k.

Sam - I don't know of a single person who has paid anything like 'full list' for a new Blaze package in the last couple of years...  and certainly nothing  anywhere like the figure you suggest anyway !!  Heck at that pricing I'd be very happy to say accept a sale for 'half-price' for my own most excellent boat with all the trimmings - all in VGC condition !!   (I'd simply buy an even newer one then ... Wink).

High list pricing is a tactic - and very often just a starting point.

Not saying the Blaze is an expensive boat, just that all new boats are expensive. The price was taken from Hartley's website and I guess, like most things, negotiable. The only way to compare the cost of new boats is to look at the builder/retailers published prices. Since I'll never be able to afford/justify a new boat of any flavour it is of purely academic interest to me. The point I was answering was the £1700 cost of a Tasar mast which makes the Blaze carbon option look very reasonable.

Advertising daft high prices then discounting heavily every sale isn’t a very smart marketing practice.

Just think of all those potential customers put off by the high price who never even started the negotiations.

The technical specification of the 'Spectrum' states top section of mast is GRP, never come across this in dinghies, does it work ? And is it heavy at top of mast ?

Not unknown, but not much advantage, except in high tension overhead wire areas. Carbon is so much better.
