.......I struggle to keep up with the Ents and L@sers but that's the compromise I chose to accept. It is not something you have to accept at all !! Try and get along to one of the class training days - you are unlikely to trouble many Phantoms dead down-wind in light stuff ( but they do carry over 1m of additonal sail as well note) But you can and should trouble most other mainstream single-handers. .... In short weight well forward, heel the boat either to leeward or windward, ease kicker to let the roach project further forward, plate half up .. and do practice with other Blazes. You also should not follow the same downwind track as say a Laser... 'deep' for sure but a bit higher and periodic gybing is better for VMG.....

Thanks Mike, I do most of that but am still learning the angles to sail. I do have swinging spreaders (M7 mast) and I will try with less/no kicker next time.

I recall they did a change of rig on the Tasar too, so the concept is not alien to International one design classes. Presumably it improved (maybe marginally) its performance

Why would anyone do that when there are perfectly good lifts?

The only change was from dacron to laminate sails. Mast and boom stayed the same. Made no difference to the performance. The boat is still as it was when they first made it. In fact, I believe the early ones still quick

Looking at pics the jib looks pretty much the same, the main may have a little more roach but many SMOD classes have updated their sails and even complete rigs to carbon once they escape the clutches of their original manufacturer.

I do recall Mike sailing straight through my lee upwind in about 3 knots of wind during the Round Sheppey when I was in a Europe. He was sailing probably 20 deg lower, 5 deg of leeward heel and body right up by the mast ... at twice my boatspeed! Those draggy aft sections were well clear of the water. I was impressed as I had never seen a Blaze go like that in light stuff before. He knows how to sit still. He won.

TBF he'd have needed to be a fair bit ahead at the finish to get you on handicap. By all accounts he's no slouch though and I do take his advice seriously. I suspect it was a bit more than 5º too, I posted a pic on here or fb a while ago with me sailing the Blaze 'flat' and was amazed to find, when I actually looked properly I was heeled 6º to leeward......

There's more roach on the main, with less draft down low. The jib now also has a roach, and full battens. In drifters the dacron jib is actually quicker but the new sails have better gust response. I have the impression that the newer sails have brought the fleet together a bit because of the improved gust response. The new jib can be a bit of a hassle between races, where you used to able to roll the old one up. The sails allegedly keep their top-line performance longer but you no longer have the situation where the mains last for decades (literally) at club level since the Mylar develops tears and holes when dacron remained bulletproof. Frank said that the new sails were needed because the old dacron was becoming expensive. Some people also promised that the new sails would update the class and make it more popular, which doesn't really appear to have happened. The class has maintained its strength, though, at times when others are doing poorly. As Boatshed says, the earliest boats are still competitive although some of them are getting a bit flexy.
