I might be wrong, but AIUI the RS Elite was brought into existence by a group of people at or around HISC who wanted a boat suitable for the harbour and the bay, and to replace a sym kite keelboat that was moribund (Soling?). How many sold? I don't know. Have RS made any money on them? I don't know that either, but they are elegant boats, for sure.

An ultra-light, high quality two hander, modern rig, optimised to be easy to sail by people who are no longer willing to crouch in the bottom of the boat in light air?

I think that was what the X1 was pitching for; I am of the view that the emphasis of two person boats has been for high performance and open water or heavy polyethylene boats, whilst most venues remain small, sheltered, more suited beat and running style boats that one can readily lug around (light).

It needs to be simple enough to attract a wide range of sailors, particularly at the front end, but technical enough to satisfy those of that persuasion.

If the Tasar were not so sticky in the light stuff it would probably fit the bill ... enter the Icon!

Which gets you back to; if you want to get enough momentum, you need to get a lot of boats out to the right places.
Happily living in the past

Isn't that the brief the Icon was supposed to fulfill?

Saw an H2 in Chichester Harbour just around Itchenor a few weeks ago. We were coming round from Northney and it was blowing a 6.  The bloke in the H2 was going upwind at a rate of knots and looked very comfortable. Not busting a gut hiking or anything desperately strenuous. Bloody good advert for it I thought.

There are two at Itchenor now so probably one of those. It is nearly 2m wide which helps upwind in a blow and the rig is easy to depower even with a 9M+ sail. The mast deals with the gusts nicely too. We had a recent race at our club in a blow and everyone went swimming at the gybe mark except me and that was more to do with the boat than my skill!!

The reason the H2 hadn't come up is because hopefully it's a bit early to say 'whatever happened to' ..
The H2 still has traction it's problem comes from lack of marketing in a global sense, there's a potential customer down here, he's been waiting ages to even see one, talks of some event might about to be going on at Herne Bay which is an hours drive and a day out of his life and unlikely even a chance to try it.

Getafix nails exactly the issues, boat numbers and people to spread the word which would be done better with an open rig and more folk profiting from the sales spread in the lack of the ability to finance large numbers of demo boats. Three years ago I made exactly the same case to Ovingtons regarding the Solution but it fell on deaf ears, folk in the marine business are far too involved in their businesses often to see the bigger picture.

Nothing wrong with being involved in their business closely. I suspect that the marine trade suffers from a lack of awareness or experience in raising funding. There are many well-meaning, thoroughly talented crafts-people with some incredible skills. What I don't see so much of are the young, technically savvy people you see getting hundreds of thousands or millions in VC or start-up funding for some really quite spurious business cases.

~£150k-200k would build you a nice fleet to seed the market with if you could find a backer willing to take the risk, a talented builder willing to commit and had a business model that enabled lots of sailors and vendors to get into the new class fast because they could access the product and make money out of promoting it.

I agree with this approach and the comments from iGRF and Getafix actually. The guy that builds the H2 did have two demo boats and was rushing around lots last year but he got to the point where he could not build them fast enough so the demo boats kept getting sold as quickly as he could build them. Where the boat has gotten traction is at places where someone has one - at my club me and one other guy bought in after a demo and that lead to four others buying boats within the next few months once they saw it out there. Whilst I do not have a deal with the maker, he has treated me well when I needed replacement parts or enquired about a trade in which I am sure he sweetened to make it about the cost of a new sail in order to help generate second hand sales which are few when a boat is new.

I like the idea of building a model around someone financing a fleet and getting paid out of subsequent sales. Might look at that myself in a few years if all goes well at work!!
