I think it could be a really good idea. But not with a triangles. If you're mid fleet, it's the dirty air on the beats that kills you. You're actually in the pretty decent position tactically to do overtaking on the first downwind if you're buried in the pack (leaders still close, and blanketed by fleet). So I just can't see anyone electing to the triangle anytime but at the end. What would really help overtaking is an outer loop beat, that you reach across to after the first leeward mark. That would give people in the mid pack an opportunity sail their second beat in clear air, which would really give an opportunity to catch up.
It doesn't happen in quite the same way though. Although the assy have a different proper course, they only have one true proper course. In this scenario boats would often have two 'proper' courses depending on which mark they choose to go to next.

It sounds like a great idea - and can only really be assessed by testing it across different categories of boat, handicap vs class race and potentially across the wind range too (planing reaching legs would be different from long bobbing ones).
My only other point: nice to see someone actually giving some thought about keeping the mid fleet engaged in the overall racing process.

Nightmare scenario for safety cover widening the beat still further, but other than that I like the idea.

Nah; put put a wing mark in which is really marginal about getting there with the kite .... would be a great addition IMHO.

I can see it offers some tactical 'gaming' opportunities. In a PY race, it might be good for breaking up the procession. But in a championship, where we'd normally move marks each lap if the wind shifts, I can see a lot of complication for dubious benefit.

don't know anyone who likes tight reaching in a musto skiff or similar, spectators may though, but would enjoy the extra downwind leg length.

Making a three-sail reach marginal makes tactical choices necessary. Go high & pop later; Pop early & hope for a lift or pressure drop so you don't have to drop to make the mark. Is there an assy equivalent to the Aussie Drop? Crew weight comes into it, of course, but doesn't it always?

Noah, absolutely can be tactical, would have to be well set angle though as to tight its a two/one sail fetch and too low and you lose that particular element of when to choose to hoist.
