Sometimes I think I should have been a mothy.. They do come up with some trick ideas, Only last night I spent restless hours trying to think of a complete kitesurfing control bar style sheet and steering system so I didn't have to have all this effing rope and that absurd wiggle stick thing. Being able to be out on the bar steering the boat left and right like you steer a kite and sheeting the power on and off in similar manner would be really cool.
Anyway back to this guy.. what dy'all think https://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/206882/Home-Build-International-Moth-Blog-6 |

The usual problem with that setup is a lack of flexibility. Mast bend, changes in rake etc stop it working properly. It will be interesting to see if he's found a way to overcome that.

So the green rope that runs on the track is kicker (not rigged in the video, but seen in the photos)?
Looks neat. I've seen another moth with kicker adjusted at the clew (boom height fixed). I would of thought that would work well in conjunction with this system.

Not convinced about this. He now has two ropes to pull to do the single thing that a mainsheet did unless there was a lot of kicker on. He can let the sail in and out on the traveller but to alter leach profile he has to go to the other rope which is effectively a kicker with no compression into the base of the mast.

which is only the same as the old days of boats making much more use of traveller when the kicker was rather weaker and/or less adjutable than a cascade or gnav

I think you run so much kicker on a modern moth rig that the main sheet only adjusts angle anyway rather than leech profile

They are getting closer and closer to windsurf rigs which don't use any kicker as such (or outhaul tension BTW which would, effectively, apply kicker on a wishbone rig). They rely entirely on downhaul tension to bend the mast and control twist and 'camber inducers' on the front end of the battens (which the Moths seem to do now).

A moth must be different for a couple of reasons. Firstly the high speed in relation to wind speed. Won't that mean less twist will ever be required, as the apparent wind is more similar between top and bottom of the sail compared to a slower boat? Secondly, heeling to windward changes the geometry. So something that works well on a Moth might not read across to a Solo or anything else with a 4 digit PY.
