Handicap racing is only b**locks because nobody with any sense is working to make it better, plus that attitude by it's very nature is killing the sport, since, for most of us handicap racing is all we've known or all there is available ergo dinghyracing is b**locks.
Now with the combination of that attitude, the lack of committment elsewhere you have precisely the reason the sport is in decline. You and your attitude is exactly that of the 'establishment' so therefore you're all guilty of killing the sport. ![]() |

Add the words ‘above average’ to apply to your point... which I agree with btw. Then look at the number of Laser returns compared to any other class and argue it’s not the most representative.... Then go on a forum and pick a side of the debate and realise the only conclusion is handicap racing is b**locks.

How many of the top Laser sailors race in handicap events (apart from the few high profile ones like SailJuice and the Birkett)?

PY is so favourable on Sprint I could win virtually every race.

Surely a fair amount of average to good laser sailors are avoiding the PY entirely (or at least avoiding it in meaninful ways) and racing at clubs with proper fleets? What’s th point of a Laser if it’s not for the proper racing it affords???

I've sailed a mirror while sitting on the foredeck (single handed), with a crew, just send them in front of the mast!
Anything to lift the large flat part of the hull out of the water... (Be careful - not very stable, nor is it easy to reach the tiller extension) Colin

Most of our younger newbies start in a Laser, majority of them stick with Lasers. I sit on the thwart in the Mirror, mind never sailed it in a drifter yet, not sure if you can get any further forwards ? Will have to have a look.

Why would the number or proportion of newbies coming into Lasers have changed over the years?
Is there evidence that this "newbie effect" is greater in 2018 than it was in 1978, 1988, 1998 etc? If so, where is the evidence? If the class is the one that newbies buy, shouldn't it be encouraged for the good of the sport? Wouldn't the fact that the Laser has been the world's largest class for years and an Olympic class for years have led to there being many serious and experienced sailors in it, and therefore led to it having a very tough handicap in the past? It's a drifter - weight forwards, however uncomfortable!
And the Laser PY keeps getting more beneficial because the newbies come out of their level 2 course and buy an old Laser because there's lots of others and they join the racing and be in the bottom quarter of the results. By the time they've improved they've probably found a more suitable boat so there aren't so many better Laser results and the RYA change the handicap..... |
