I had one when I sailed a laser. My main boat was always a topper, then a 29er, but I used a radial rig on my dads laser to get some better club racing for much of that time. Certainly wasn't going to buy a new class sail for that.
The replica was about the cost of a good nick second hand one. But there's a risk buying used and unseen. So it's quite a lot of effort to drive somewhere to look at a sail. There's probably tens , if not hundred of class rules regular sailors break, some unknowingly, some out of convenience, even at open and national level. As long as no one perceives you to be trying to get an unfair advantage pretty much anything goes.

It is at our place. Of the 18 lasers in our handicap race on Sunday i wouldn’t be surprised if half of them had replica sails.
Most of them were on £500 boats that would otherwise have weeds growing on them. It seems that the exodus of keenys into Aeros and D-Zeros has encouraged some less experienced to get a new sail and give racing a go. |

I have never seen a Laser with a replica sail, is it commonplace ?

An interesting theory. Take away the CA mandating genuine Laser parts, and Laser ceases to have much of a business model. The Laser class organisations do get quite a lot from Laser in terms of boats provided for major events. Being able to go to a Laser worlds with just your tiller as hand baggage is big bonus compared to shipping a Finn or trying to charter one. |

almost certainly a SMOD with a genuinely independent class association is real pain ... especially when the class association isn;t necessariyl the design rights holder ... if the CA has the design rights / owns the moulds etc etc etc - any builder is their contractor and it;s clear where the bread is buttered ... |

you assume the peers can muster enough of a sh*t to feel anything really needs 'sorting out'.... most clubs seem to handle it fine in reality, and anyone worth their salt is buying the real thing anyway. It's only on the internet that it becomes a bona fide bone of contention from my experiences. @Jim - good point, well made..... very much seems to be undermining the ILCA / UKLA ... the wording even suggests that there maybe a new traveller series in development, club Laser reboot maybe?

The huge discount on the button free sails makes me think Laser Performance are attempting to undermine the Laser class association in the same way they are doing for the Sunfish Class. I don't for a moment believe that the class association gets anything like that much money for the buttons.

I think we all know that people will buy these and race them regardless and they wont think twice about declaring them as non-legal leaving it down to their peers/club to sort it out.

Technically it would be absolutely fine in a handicap fleet - just as long as the entrant doesn't enter as a "Laser". If they enter as Laser derivative and cite that there is no increase in sail area, I'd think it's highly unlikely this would actually affect the handicap rating s/he receives. |
