More strange that it was chosen as the Olympic singlehander when it was, presumably, designed as a two man boat.......

ironic - given it was a singlehander, but this strangely appealing in an anti-establishment manner.

More like a midweight's game, I'd say, for the biggest UK single-handed fleets. More to the point, it is hard to be an outlying weight. You'll do well in certain conditions, but unless a whole series is windy or light, you lose out to the average weights too often to win events regularly. Hence the oddity of the ideal weights in the Radial being different for men and women at international level.

I think the UK view is very different to the rest of Europe in that the FD, 470 and Star had strong domestic fleets whilst they were in the games and have stayed strong since. I think the Tempest still has a following on the big European lakes.
I think the Finn would survive  and in my opinion seems to have found more local fleets with the strong interest in the masters series.
Watching the medal race from the Euro was very interesting, add a couple of Drones and it would be even better.
I think over recent years the trend has been with modern rigs and controls to be able to de power the boats so much dinghy sailing is turning into a lightweights game.

As I wrote before. No idea why a class as prestigious and with such great history (freestanding of the Olypmics) as the Finn, puts soooool much emphasis on being part of it.

Because they know what happens to classes when they lose the Olympic slot, name me one example of a class that has thrived following deselection?

Star

The Europe - admittedly not in the UK where it has never been a big class, even when part of the Olympics, but have a look at International numbers and you'll see that it's huge!

Post was edited - a NOT was omitted !

Yes - should the unthinkable happen the Finn will be well supported.

Does that simple fact demonstrate that it, and other boats like it, are far more representative of what we all sail and what we chose to sail?

i.e most of the other Olympic classes are not ?

Unlike some classes (470, 49er, Nacra etc etec etc) the vast majority of Finn sailors are Olympic aspirants

Don’t understand ... Finn has a big following of Masters, Grand masters with no Olympic aspirations, and frankly when Ainslie and Scott were/are sailing it was hard to see the Olympic aspiration of any of the other GBR Finn sailors.

Whereas, I see very little activity in 470, 49’er or Naxra that is not Olympic focused.

Or were you being ironic?

According to the class report to ISAF in 2002 there had been 197 boats built in the last 5 years, in 2017 72. In 2001 the worlds had competitors from 26 nations, in 2016 13. In 2002 42 Nations had paid class subs, in 2017 25. In spite of a publicity machine nearly as effective as the Finn and financial resources beyond most classes wildest dreams the numbers suggest its in a significant decline.

[although to be fair I was expecting it to be worse than that]
