Sailing on TV is only ever as good as the commentator, especially if you're trying to appeal to the non-sailor.

My Mrs is the most anti of sailing widows you could come across but she got into the match racing of the 2012 Olympics, presumably because it was easy to follow and quite intense, why don't you do that? says she.. as if I don't every time I'm in a close tacking battle with some youf in a Solution who keeps getting in the way down the lake.

I have no interest in curling and still do not understand the rules but it did not stop me watching 30 minutes of it over the winter Olympics because it was on. My point is that people will not jump off the sofa to take up a new sport because it on the TV but there is no harm in letting people watch a little of it from time to time!

they may 'know' who Ben Ainslie is on AQoS... but they wouldn't have a clue about the boats, the competition, the race format, the rules...

I hardly think that knowing there's some handsome sailor chap who wins medals and hangs out with the Duchess of Cambridge (read: "posh") will really translate into footfall at the local pond for complete newbies.

It might, just might, reinvigorate those who sailed when they were younger...

My wife knows nothing about sailing, never been to club, yet she could follow the 'Star' racing, she was quite pleased a Brit' won, can only speak from my own experience regarding non sailors watching sailing on tv.
Old Timer,
I would be surprised if vast majority of Brit's couldn't name Ben Ainslie.

Talking to my sister last night; she is into motor sport; she tells me all flavours of motor sport are in decline and many will be gone in a generation.

Strikes me that all sports that require cash and commitment are in trouble with the younger generation not interested in that type of deal ... they want low commitment stuff and are limited on cash ... many can't drive or if they can the dont own cars so can travel with trailers to events...

Fiddling with the classes at the Olympic is irrelevant to grass roots participation.

It gets back to the question, 'What do we want from it ourselves' are we after the pinnacle of sailing competition with global bragging rights, which I'm sorry, but Olympics aint it, never has been never will be, or..

Do we want some sort of televisual contrivance that will have folk beating paths to the doors of our various clubs to try this stuff?
