Well it was a bit quiet first thing but by the time I left at 3 the show seemed as busy as normal, I had a record quick journey, no snow, we're in full thaw down here, it's all gone, great, all the hysterical news broadcasts have emptied the roads.

I went up last night and the M3 and M25 were the smoothest I've ever known. Quiet, nobody driving badly. Just wet. It was very, very sketchy towing through some N London residential streets though - google maps fault.

Not dinghy show related, but thanks for posting the update... heading around there Monday morning and I couldn’t believe it wouldn’t have cleared by then! |

Here on the southern M25 it seems to have been thawing for several hours, and the forecast is rain tomorrow.

We've decided not to go this year as we can't yet get our vehicles out of our hilly lanes and nothing's worth the risks - we're only about 5 miles from the part of the A303 that featured on the telly because people wouldn't heed the warnings and weather forecast and stop in hotels or not travel so ended up stuck for 13 hours or so.
All these reporters out interviewing snow bound drivers never ask "So why were you travelling when the forecast was so bad and advice was to stay put?" - would love to hear the answers. That irresponsibility could also be a reason for insurers not to pay out on vehicle damage. |

I doubt I will go, getting to the main road from my house was a nonstarter today, less snow but freezing rain then topped up with more snow.

Forgetting about the weather (any plans we might have had are scuppered by the demise of the railway at Dawlish) it strikes me that a travelling show would stimulate more interest than being locked into the Ally Pally. On the times that I have worked off various stands, the market has essentially been North London or Essex based, or those exhibiting grabbing 10 minutes to look around. If the show cycled between Manchester, Birmingham and London it would cover the heartlands of dinghy racing, and could work much better to link clubs with prospective sailors.

Got there at 2pm, checked in with the organisers, noted that there are now even more keelboats in the hall (the new RS boat does look interesting but one has to question what the Dragon and J boats are supposed to be there for). The National 12s are not alone in not making it - some trade stands have pulled but one can see that if they're going to struggle to get there, only for a reduced footfall, well, they have some sympathy.
At that point a look out of the window showed near blizzard like conditions and thinking about going down the big hill to get out, then heading back up Muswell Hill to get towards the hotel...... I bailed pronto. The snow has eased but the North Circular was no fun and that was at 3pm. By all accounts it nearly didn't happen - the events of the next two days will show if hanging in there was a good more or a shot in the left foot. D

Off the RYA website:
"Having carefully weighed up all the factors, we have decided that the Show will go ahead. This has been a difficult decision, due to lots of conflicting evidence, advice and opinions. The forecast appears to be improving and a substantial number of exhibitors want the Show to go ahead. Alexandra Palace is open and build up is underway and the surrounding area is largely clear. If it is not safe for you to travel, then please do not attempt to do so. If you have bought an advanced ticket for the show you will be able to attend on either Saturday or Sunday." At least that clears up the ambiguity in the ticket company's e-mail for me so we'll be using our Saturday tickets on Sunday. |
