GP14

   I'd like to find out peoples views on the Gp14, I've allways thought nasty things about them but compairing there sail area to things that I like the look of, like larks, they seems similar.
I am particualy interested in ideal crew weights as I can find that on the web.

	They look great in the heavy stuff, broad reach with spinny is also fast for a boat of that weight! If sailed right they're good on handicap aswel, we have someone at the club beating RS 300s etc over the line. Also i think the crew weight range is pretty large.

	Sort of mid 20's crew weight I think, offhand. Kite is pretty small, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing in some places. Genoa is small by FD standards, but can still be a bit of a handful for smaller folks. With the double floors don't have the trouble with swamping that the older ones have. Not particularly light but very solid.

	They're stable as can be but they're actualy (dare I say it) nice to sail. Ive only sailed one a couple times, once in very light winds and another time sunday just gone in silly big wind and both times, to my suprize, really like helming it. Not sure what its like from a crews point of veiw but judging from the turnouts they get at the big events, it cant be a bad boat. I'll be sailing one all next year on the circuit and am actualy looking forward to it. Especially the world champs at Abersoch, I love that place! Doug

	I learnt on one when I was 12 and it was quite large at that age/size... Apparently the recommended all up weight (for heavy winds certainly) is 27 stone, however me and Villan managed with about 18 (just). The genoa is quite big, although you can put a jib on if it's howling. The kite again I suppose is quite small, but it's stayed small to be useable by all sizes of people. They're nice boats, the new ones are lovely to sail. They're not the most exciting, are quite hard work when it's windy (although they're very stable when heeled over at 45 degrees), but have done very well for an old, originally not designed for racing class.

	having both helmed and crewed in gp's. i would have to say that they are lovely to helm. lovely and balanced upwind. as a crew they are not much fun until you fly the kite, then its good, but very tiring after a day. sometimes spinnaker systems can be very complicated and difficult to get used to (depends on boat setup). the new ones do seem to be a fair amount quick and are definately more comfortable with the through deck sheeting. as for weight, at the youth inlands this year one helm/crew pair were only 14stone and went out in the f4/5 breeze. i had about 20stone and could have done with more. mabe 22 / 23 would be the best weight if you were both fit and strong. more would help in breeze, less in calm. when im not sailing one i hate them with a vengence because they do so well on handicap. also when its light and everyone is contorted into positions, they are just sat one on each side all confortable and just glide past . in those instances i just get jealous

	I think the hull weight is quite high - find that out first. It might be a pig to haul up the slipway. The double-floors play havoc with some peoples knees, I hear.

	I liked my GP14. A straightforward boat to sail. Kite nice and small for the novice crew (wife). Heavy to drag up slopes and the genoa can be hard work when a bit breezy. Seem to carry weight well. The Duffin wood ones are just lovely. The latest plastic ones I saw at the dinghy show looked a bit soulless I still have a soft spot for them and might go back again.
	Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

	I crew a GP14 and its one of the most rewarding boats to crew. Not many classes get 39 boats at a open meeting like we did this year at Budworth. GP14's still have a great class following and fleet racing is still going strong at many clubs. See www.gp.org

	The gp 14 is a great boat to sail or race. i helm one often and have great fun! i am only 15 and wiegh around 9 stone . my crew is only 9 stone also and we can keep the boat flat in a f4-5 due to the stability! my crews grandad weighs around 16 stone and his crew is not small either at around 14 stone and the stil do wel in the lighter winds. any one can sail a gp!
