Hi,

When I bought my boat I was already a little concerned with the amount of play on the rudder - during our first season we have clocked up around 2000 miles, and having had the boat craned out earlier this week it seems to be a little worse.

The simple movement of the rudder shaft in its bearings is bound to cause some wear, but whenever there's weather helm the length of the rudder will act as a big lever putting significant forces (and consequently accelerated wear) on the bearings. Bearing wear tends to be exponential, ie the worse the fit the more quickly it wears, so this might explain why it's suddenly got worse for you over the past season. The other possibility is that the nut that holds everything together is coming undone!

I haven't yet dropped my rudder from its tube and bearings but I suspect I will have to do it before the start of next season's racing. I can tell you that the lower bearing is made from nylon and will probably have been bespoke lathe-cut to fit the shaft and hull. Finding someone to do the work may be the biggest problem, and I'm in no way certain that two boats are alike. If we could acertain that we have identical bearings maybe we could join forces in the hunt for an engineer.

Incidentally, I did ask the owner of the 'Projection Yachts' name (can't remember his name without going through the entire forum) about just this problem but although he promised to write back I never did get a reply...

Any thoughts would be welcomed.

hi,

throughout last season i noticed an amount of play in the rudder gettin progressively worse as time went by. i don't fully understand the mechanics involved. it has reached a stage now where it must be remedied. could anyone shed any light on this rudder play why it happens and how to fix it?

cheers

DECKING ...Such an important issue .... you will need shed loads for your massive Boat !
If you go for the 24 mm stuff from Argentina that could save a few bob . A full container load is the way to go , I've decked my Projection in the 28mm stuff and She looks so pretty !   a couple of inches lower in the water ... but what the heck !
She will still do 7 knots in a good blow .

Happy Christmas / New Year!

It's all been a bit quiet recently, can I assume you're all out of the water and
hard at work? We've nearly finished racing - race on Boxing Day and got one
more on New Year's Day and then Upstart is finally out of the water. Pic
below is from Boxing Day, not loads of wind but decent sunshine. Hopefully
more breeze at New Year

Last race of the season yesterday (excluding Boxing Day & New Years) and managed to bag a first in loads of wind.

Had a waterproof video cam with us and some of it is on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0ORUQikF4k

Topped out at 15.5 in completely flat water, never done that before.

Yeh its a shame, but we will still be doing sail east & Burnham etc as we are looking to get a Melges.

We feel that the running costs will be alot less as we both are still students!!

How is Proper job? Nemos been out the water since Sept so we have had to take up windsurfing!! seriously miss sailing her!
