Been said plenty of times before ... a good Mk1/2 is fully competitive. Some classes that switch to vinyl-ester/epoxy from polyester end up with 2 sub-species of the craft. Not as really true with the Blaze. But I'm not so sure about Ian's comments regading the carbon mast though (but then he is not a really a 'heavy'
![]() We know several medium and heavy guys who prefer the alloy mast. One has recently ordered a new Hartley boat but has also quietly purchased a decent used Alloy mast as he is convinced, for him at least, it is superior .... Recent years have also seen alloy mast equipped boats winning the Nationals AND good polyester boats beating all the newer epoxy ones at the Championships as well. Not idle speculation this - the records are there. Sure a new boat is more likely to be superior as it will arrive fully sorted but its 'on-the-water' superiority is not always as certain.... against earlier hulls if they are well looked after and kept near/on minimum weight (with effort of course) You can be very very competitive in an earlier Blaze (even though everyone would, as ever was the case, like a newer one !) And an 'oldun' would definitely be more wallet friendly (a big plus if I hope to keep the Spice too). Going to entirely the other end of the scale Blaze 515 sold for £500 on the FB Dinghybits group this week!!! That would have been worth a punt

Think you would struggle to get a good one with 'sort-out' potential for much less than £ 1500 ... covers, trolley, combi, rig , goodish sail ... and 515 would have been 20 years old so it may have had a tough life. But you can get lucky - however ALWAYS inspect very carefully ... all the bits soon add up !

Looking around again today (it's raining and blowing it's t!ts off here in sunny Anglesey) an I see a lot of RS Aeros for sale. Given that they've only been available for 12 months that seems like a lot of people have become disillusioned with them in a surprisingly short space of time?\
The short list to date :- H2 D-Zero RS Aero Blaze Europe Back to my old Spice, I don't have access to a grain drier I'm afraid but I could probably arrange a warm/dry air supply through the hull by putting a 4" hatch in the deck close to the bow and blowing in one hatch and out of the other? I'd not be so harsh on the Aero! It is in part a measure of the huge success and numbers already sold. A lot of people however rush into the latest classes carried away with the 'recomendations' of their new friends and today the social media chatter and noise of others - but this does mean that others can then benefit if the original purchaser subsequently decides the grass really was 'greener' elsewhere !
The boat itself is good - it is a capable all rounder (important to me at least) and goes well both inland and particularly on the lumpy/salty stuff. It really does fit the 'laser replacement' slot and now has true international credentials on top. It is imo directly chasing this slot closer than anyone .. if you believe that slot exists. I like what I sail, (in case you have not worked it out .. the Blaze btw !) but I do really like the Aero as well. I've sailed/raced all of them on your list except the H2... they all have +ve's dependng on what you are after. As ever 'each to their own' .... Edited by Cirrus - 12 Sep 16 at 6:02pm |

The Solution is a nicer sail than the Aero and weight wise considerably lighter than everything else on that list than the Zero. It needs to be on your list to at least get a go in, I've sailed or observed at very close quarters all those on your list except the H2 which is a big old boat (in a good but not necessarily light way).

GRF - think the aero is 'there' with quite a few kg to spare imo ... just saying and it is up to anyone to make up their own minds of course :-) .... does not necessarily make it fastest of course but it is certainly the lightest.

... and the Europe has a hull weight of 45kg vs. the 56kg of the Solution too.

Solution and H2 are both pretty unavailable on the secondhand market. D-Zero too unless I drop lucky. I had considered the fact that RS had sold rather more Aeros than Devoti D-Zeros (and way more than Solution) and that was the reason for the equally large number on the used market. By the same token the Solution may well be the 'solution' if I could find one in budget.
Realistically the shortlist is :- Aero Blaze Europe I raced Raceboards for many years at NW regional level and the occasional national (work got in the way of more but I was on the UKBSA Club team championships winning team a few times and even won the Vets class in the RB 7.5s at the Youths and Masters back in 2003) so I love the Aero for being so light. I also love my Spice (for all it's a very de-tuned 'skiff' and 'a bit heavy.....') so the family resemblance of the Blaze is attractive (it's, basically, a fab looking boat). I hope to sail some of those three in the next few weeks. Attractions/distractions :- I'm attracted to :- The Blaze's wings/power without maximum hiking effort* all the time. The sheer simplicity and lightweight of the Aero The Europe's rig (ex OK sailor), light weight and low price. I'm concerned by :- The Blaze's optimal sailor weight, rig power and all up weight. The Aero's cost, size (is it cramped to sail) and will the lightness make it over lively (and will the damn thinkg blow away if I capsize it and fail to hang on to something?) The Europe's low boom and old design. Oh and here's the curve ball, somebody has suggested a used RS300...... half the price of an Aero and super quick in the right hands but (my impression is) very tricky to sail, especially downwind, and on the sea. Also the Blaze is way prettier than the 300..... * if your bum is already 1225 mm from the centreline then getting it further out only makes half as much difference as it would in a Laser where it's only 650 mm out when you first slide it over the gunnel

Heres a thing, after a very quick search, a 2nd hand Aero is between £4500 and £6000 for a boat at least a year old Brand new Solution straight out of Ovingtons ready to sail £5750, or a 3 month old one, again direct from Ovington, £5350. If you are up North, there are a few at South Shields sailing club and with Ovingtons the other side of the Tyne should be fairly easy to get a test ride in one. Only really pointing this out from a cost point of view. Edited by Phil_1193 - 13 Sep 16 at 6:52am |
