Much more, I think, about the traditional sizes for development classes dating back to when people were smaller and building costs were a way bigger deal than they are now. A shorter boat meant it was easier to find knot free timber, and not so expensive, and less material meant a cheaper boat. The Farr 3.7, for instance, evolved out of the 12ft two handed classes. However it was designed as a singlehander, wasn't just a rebadged two hander with the displacement etc all wrong. Edited by JimC - 13 Jun 16 at 8:37am |

Seems to be a fair crop shorter boats from the southern hemisphere, I guess because they tend to get bigger breezes so more about planing performance than displacement sailing.
Would a V3000 with a reworked rig be a closer fit to variable UK requirements?

I must admit the shortness of length (assuming 370) did also put me off, this would predominantly be for sea sailing and even the 390 Solution feels those 30cms lacking between it and a laser and my race boards are at least 390 which is the very minimum length a dinghy should be imv.
So what we want is a 420-30 single handed trap boat with retracting cb, carbon rig and unstayed rig (yes I know, but D1's can hang a kite off an unstayed rig why not a trapeze for us light guys, then we get the best of both worlds if we have to sail it in none wire weather, we get to run by the lee.) But then it gets heavy. But then its difficult to build in your garage. But then it doesn't feel electric even though you aren't going super fast. But then it doesn't have an existing class that is looking like it will enable international events soon. But then you couldn't get that many in a container to do the events.

I did like the look of the Farr but it did not seem long enough. Stretch a Byte forward 3' with a bigger sail and a trap......but then it would need shrouds. Sliding 'chairs' then!

fair point... and given some of the suggestions already voiced, I'd build it for your situation and sail it. If you every wanted to sell it, it would be a relatively easy fix if someone wanted to have it with a permanent daggerboard set up. You'll need to consider your internal framing carefully to deal with the extra slot length. But that's not much of an issue, and if you made a foam/carbon hull you'd have weight to spare for extra frames. You'll not regret it. They are great boats.

5o5s do it the other way... they are supposed to have swivelling plates, but instead some have a swivelling cassette in the case, and a daggerboard blade that goes vertically up and down. ( there may have been a rule change to ban this recently )
