Can just see it now on the beeb, all weather websites suffer DDoS attacks traced back to a hobbits house in Kent
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

We had team racing practice in reefed fireflies. Started with no jibs, but it moderated about before really blowing up, we then went in.
Apparently the gusts were as windguru at around 40. Certainly the windiest I can remember being out in.
Surprisingly the racing was very close and the gybing duels were manic. The waves on Rutland were more reminiscent of Hayling as well.
Great afternoon sailing.

Another nightmare gusty cold sunday I should have stayed in bed. Had an attempt at playing in it, just a nightmare that was only going to bust something, make me cold and peeved off, so broke the fundamental rule, if it isn't fun, don't do it. Had one gust I was already planing on the edge of extinction on a screaming reach when it blew even harder and the nose went deeper into the water and the bloody thing all but broached like a lead mine, this isn't fun, bigger gusts are supposed to make you go faster, not slower...

Someone told me afterwards what I should do (dump the kicker) but when you're already half up on your ear, leaningnback in to unleash controls isn't exactly on the menu, interesting problem though. As it was I ended up screwing up wind with a dumped main, but not what I'd have liked to do, so that and getting stuck in irons with my new keep outy thing, I thought f**k it this isn't even going to be fun, and came in.

The main issue I have with strong wind racing is, if on safety having to rescue large sailors, a couple of weeks ago a elderly member got into difficulties and needed lifting into safety boat, he was probably double my weight.

There are various ways of doing this discussed on the RYA safety boat course, but in the end, physics will win unless the safety boat is prepared. We carry solid ladders to clip on the edge of the dory so people can climb up if able. They don't go under the boat like rope ones. On a small lake, you could even resort to bringing them near the edge where they can stand up.

A friend at a commercial centre had the problem of getting a large person back into the rescue boat. His solution was to get the guy to stand on the engine horizontal plate above the prop, and the used the electrics to tilt the engine. I thought that was quite clever.
