100 odd boats at last two Musto Worlds, good national fleets and not everyone its 80kg + . Iver is only 65kg and is often at the front of the fleet, the's GER champion, second at Keile Woche. A Contender is not the only option out there and the 3.7 is probably a much better all round conditions boat, look at the Contender results for the flyer last weekend - Dogs of chains Saturday contender 1, 2 and on Sunday neither did the second race because they didn't see the point. The 3.7's ive seen look really well proportioned and and well laid out

The 3.7 did look a nice boat when I saw one sailing at Sailfest a couple of years back. How about it being a trap boat for light chaps and ladies? After all our Byte Class is about 50/50 light males and ladies.

There, in a nutshell is dinghy sailings biggest problem. Contender would be about the 10th choice of boat for me but we should all do our bit to support fleets. everyone picking a boat because they like it is why most sail around claiming glory once a year based on some silly number average. I'm 72kg and sail a contender I'm not the lightest in the fleet. |

Sailing's biggest problem is people sailing boats they like?
Why not let Contenders, Farrs,600s etc share a race. Break down traditional class structures and race similar style boats on handicap. |

There's a light guy does quite well in Contenders and we have three or four racing at Hythe, but until they realise nobody wants to go near the heavy mofo's when they come ashore, and get them built down to a weight that folk can manhandle, they are forever going to be the province of lard boys and those who've never experienced picking up something of reasonable weight.
Having said that I always fancied a go in one, but it never happened and I also quite like the look of that composite Farr, if I find myself without a crew at Hythe for another year, I might consider giving one a go for a season, then again will I wait six months for delivery? Probably not. Edited by iGRF - 17 Dec 15 at 11:25am |

Sure is, if we all compromise a bit we can get fleet racing going again. I enjoy the balance of contender and class racing together much more than I would sailing a technically superior boat (ie lighter more refined) like the Farr 3.7 on my own against people on handicap. If I was in NZ I'd sail the Farr as there are no contenders face it in the 50's-80's people had more time and fleet racing was the way it was done and participation was considerably higher than today. We can't get back peoples time but we can get fleet racing back and I truly believe this will help participation |

whilst I tend to agree with the sentiment, I can't help but think the horse has bolted on this one. I'd also add that the Farr 3.7 is not really aiming itself at mainstream club racers and fleet racers, it's more than just a racing boat, it's a boat to cherish, love and own for the pure pleasure of it. I like the boat and the concept - if those guys really wanted to go fleet racing and compromise on the overall ownership experience, I'm sure they'd be welcomed with open arms to Laser Radial Masters.

There are lots of great boats out there. The Farr 3.7 happens to be a great boat if you... are between 50-80kg want a boat you can trapeze helm in that doesn't require: - Olympic levels of fitness - Huge commitment - limbo dancing skills feels electric but isn't actually body damagingly fast you can move it around without a hernia fits in a garage is perfect for women is perfect for youth transition to skiffs etc.. (esp 49erFX ) you can build yourself is one design with room for experimentation doesn't cost a bomb As for fleets, we are working on that. But ultimately that's down to you guys. PS... think of it as your standard hiking single hander that you don't have to kill yourself up-wind on.

So your suggestion is that the RYA/ISAF/Whoever provides an official list of four boats (single hander and double hander, hiking, trapeze) and that is what everyone sails? Makes for good, big fleets. But I for one will always prefer sailing the boat I enjoy most. It's a hobby, not a job. ;) |

And that is why it will not work. I, for one, like the diversity we have in the UK. there are choices if you want to fleet race and choices if you want to sail a boat you like sailing. To have a class dictated to me by the RYA or other would turn me away from sailing in an instant.
