My Gill Hydrophobe top has become a little too arm pitty for my liking.
It generally gets chucked in the washing machine on a quick 40 degree wash or a long 30 degree one with a small amount of detergent. However that isn't making much difference Is there anything that's worth trying to return it too it's former glory or is it a case of that's what happens with modern kit and it's time to replace? If the latter, any recommendations? The Hydrophobe was OK, but I prefer my NP equivalent (Thermalite). Only problem with the NP top is it shrinks every time is washed, but does stretch back afterwards. Any other options worth considering? Don't like the Gul Evotherm, but Rooster Polypro and Magic Marine Bipoly are possibles.

There is some enzyme stuff you can use which supposedly helps. Mirazyme, I think it is called.

Thing is the problem is basically caused by a population of bacteria, so washing at 30 degrees or even 40 degrees with small amounts of detergent isn't going to do much to kill them off.

Bacteria is the trouble. You can use a deodorant spray on the top. Deodorant “switches off” the smell the bacteria give off. Do not use anti-perspirent as this works in a different way and does not switch off the smell.

Simple solution: Anti-bacterial laundry cleanser (e.g. from Dettol). Add to the laundry, run at 30 or 40˚. Done. After two years our hydrophobs are still fresh. Even after getting a bit unpleasant over the course of a long event a single wash was sufficient to bring them right back.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
I'm running with Chris's suggestion of the Dettol anti bacterial laundry cleanser, although I can see the McNett's solution of wet suit shampoo plus a soaking in Mirazyme is probably the ultimate solution. Loving the other suggestions, although slightly concerned that using vinegar (or mouthwash, which I've sen suggested elsewhere) might leave me with a different smelly problem. ![]() May well treat myself to an MM bipoly top anyway and take advantage of the 15% off Boat Show offer that finishes this weekend.

If none of that works, it's best just to grab the top, bring it out to the garden and take the good christian dark ages approach of "Burn the witch!!".

Or just get a new crew with no sense of smell?
