Far be it from me to defend the Laser, I might own one again, but I'm no fan of the hardware... the reason it's even being discussed here is the very reason why neither the Aero or Zero will make a significant impact on it in the next few years at least.
Update time - how many real local fleets are there of Aeros- in other words racing independently, or in significant enough number that the spreadsheet doesn't really feature in their group mindset? Lymington? Gurnard? The rumour I heard was that Bowmoor was a bit flash in the pan and they're not out much, it's a bit of Supernova stronghold. Any others? Chelmarsh must be doing OK by now? "Glad you like it Lionel, I reckon there'll be a Tasaresque Aero 2 along soon!"
Yes, I heard that they were developing one. Looking forward to seeing if it is true and if so what it looks like as also the revamped Icon.

Not vanity in each case for personal sail numbers - in the Finn for example you may well have more than one hull and can switch rigs from one to another without the need to fiddle with sail numbers |

None for me - heard rumours that the punters and instructors liked both boats, as you might hope. There is a youtube vid of the two reaching about somewhere.

I gather Minorca Sailing now have a D-Zero as well as their Aeros, Dan. Have you had any feedback?

Surprises me a bit tbh. You should be able to be better in every way to the beginner or expert alike in one of these new boats. Stability should be tuned to some extent to provide similar twitchiness/challenge, but with the extra response and lack of inertia that you get with weight reduction and stiffness increases. I.e the experience should provide comfort (of the psychological, as well as ergonomic type) to the beginner sailor. Not to mention rudders, rigs etc that work. I heard that some bloke said that getting back into the laser after a *ero was like getting onto an ironing board laden with bricks. I liken stepping back into the laser to sailing through treacle whilst on ether, sheathed in a whole body extra safe rough rider prophylactic. None of which are great analogies for beginner or expert alike. I can appreciate that if you drive a caterham, say, your senses can be a bit assaulted by feedback from stuff which would be off putting to less confident sailors, but that is a very crude vehicle, and there are other analogies that can be made where modest performance improvements are made along with handling etc which is accessible and inspiring to beginner and pro alike. |

Guess that depends on whether there's someone else to race against in that Aero Jim!

Unsurprising. I would have expected the Laser to be a better beginners boat and the Aero to appeal more to a committed sailor.
