2nd PY race certainly had 72 competitors on the start line and Saturday races show at least 73 on the water, so pretty impressive numbers all-round for a first Nationals!

Not a bad report and looks like fun was had by all. I do think the reporter should check the facts though as at no point (according to the results) were all 74 competitors on the water at the same time.

maybe they decided not to publish them?  Who knows, their prerogative.... maybe it was just a bit of fun on the side, a practice race or something and publishing the results would just add confusion.

Either way  I think the reporter probably has her facts pretty damn straight and if 'the handicap race with all 74 boats on the start line ... got underway in around 8-10 knots' then I'd certainly not question her integrity, nor clutch at straws analysing the results table in an attempt to discredit the event.   Wink

We've got a new member with an Aero 9, first time sailor by all counts, so it's not all class robbery.

You're making the assumption this is a zero sum game. Not as simple as that. If we just think of Champs turnouts, do you suppose every one of those people went to a Champs in a different class last year that they won't go to this year, or is it possible some of them are full of new enthusiasm and going to a champs for the first time or first time for a while?

Every class has people who own boats but for one reason or another are a bit down on enthusiasm and don't actually use them. If those people get enthused by a different class and start sailing regularly their old class is no worse off. Indeed it may be better off, since a decent boat may come on the market and be available for someone moving out of junior classes.

So its not a zero sum game, its not one wins, the other loses, and a burst of enthusiasm for a new class or competition conceivably could benefit everyone.

Jim, not for the first time you have used plausible arguments to counter my prejudiced rants. Please stop doing this. Please visualise an emoticon of a wink.......
