Interesting to see the importance of a strong club fleet on Nationals Attendance

The Ents jumped from 54 boats to 67 boats this year,  boosted by 11 local entries

Contrast that to the RS200s who slipped to 75 boats from 119 last year at HISC  with its big local fleet

Which is interesting, given some classes always choose a neutral venue.

I don't know how significant such fluctuations are in demonstrating the health of a class though. The other thing to be aware of is that some classes make a policy of spreading their championships right round the country, even though they know some areas will have a lesser turnout, but others will stay where they get the highest turnout. Arguably a class that can get a reasonable turnout everywhere is healthier than a class that gets a slightly larger turnout, but only in its heartland...

Another approach is to go to good venues in attractive locations to encourage a holiday vibe and encourage club fleets to come en masse, rather than consider championships as something for an elite element of the fleet.  Venues like Tenby or Marazion fit this bill.  20 clubs bring 5 boats each gets you a 100 boat championship.

If classes have good club fleets in sea venues it makes sense to support them, it is a bit of a kick in the teeth when you class chooses to support the venue up the road from a club with an established fleet.

The 200s are at Abersoch this year.  As a class which is much stronger in the South than the North it isn't that surprising that the numbers have dropped.

I don't think it makes any comment on the health of the class, just that venues like Abersoch and North Berwick tend to have a much lower turnouts than the southern venues.

I think the only class that can really pull off good numbers everywhere is probably the GP14's and thats probably just through force of numbers spread around the country. I think the MR's and possibly Fireballs wouldn't suffer to much as they have good racing numbers.

There is the possibility for classes to become very 'heartland centric' which leads to being very insular and not outward facing.

Classes that only have Nationals in the South/South West seem to be letting their Northern fleets shrival on the vine which is a loss for everyone

This is a problem with poorly supported classes. If we had the Byte Inland Champs at our club we could start by putting seven of our own boats on the water. However at Combs we are rather far north and do not wish to discourage South Coast sailors. We can travel at least four of our boats so a more central location would be preferable. Ideas anyone?

Honestly, I think the Byte should team up with the Europe, Steaker, Lightning, Comet and Solo (tho they may consider themselves too big to play) and anything else of that ilk and hold a joint championship. First over the line winner, with class prizes if you muster more than 5 boats. Make it a three day event somewhere like Lyme or Broadstairs.

We have thought of this Peaky. Plans are afoot! I particularly think the Steaker class sounds tasty! The point with small fleets is that they are very competitive at the top but it gets lonely back in the (small) fleet.

There are loads of boats out there but they must be leisure/club sailing and will not travel. Inland championships are less intimidating.
