Yep ... that is how it is ...

Maybe, seems to be working.

However I can't see the Aero being able to rake back loads ... the design does not permit the option.

Jim,
I think Dan explained this to you once already.  I wont profess to know.  But the fashion wont change in a class if its impossible to actually rake the mast any further.  Mainly because it simply wouldn't be possible.

ME personally I prefer the look of a smaller gap between boom and deck a la Finn, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I guess a low boom keeps the heeling arm down. A friend of line tried the Aero and found the high boom made judging sheet tension and boom angle difficult, but maybe you get used to it. He was also surprised how twitchy it was downwind, although impressed by acceleration on the reaches. All in all I got the impression he wasn't overly enthused by it.

... or has a keel on the bottom?

Actually, need is a little strong. A boat can benefit from righting lines

Seems to me that if a boat doesn't need righting lines it's either very narrow or else for wimps...

And I find this enthusiasm for droopy booms bizarre, what's so good about a feature that is both aerodynamically and ergonomically undesirable, and what will happen if a fashion comes along for increased mast rake and the sail no longer fits? That's why Finn rigs are the way they are...

I don't get it?  So someone fits righting lines?  If they are one of my mates, I would probably take the piss.  If they were a newbie i would recommend them.  I had them on my 300's probably other than the kicker the rope i used the most!!!  My brother fitted Pink sail numbers to his boat.  Again I destroyed him for it, like I do about his PY if/when he beats me.  The same way I rip into my other mate for sailing an OK that looks like it was built out of drift wood.  The same way I take the piss out of the K1 sailors for needing stabilisers.

Does it have an effect on the sport, no it does not!  If anything the banter makes it more enjoyable!

IMNSHO righting lines are a worthy spec list optional extra, one i would have no problem fitting if i felt the boat needed them.

No - it doesn't 'help', but I can't really see it does that much damage either.  Every sport has a bit of kit snobbery and banter- if everyone was 'awfully nice' all the time about everything related to the kit and their fellow club members it could feel a little claustrophobic....
