Same here. The best feeling Laser I owned was 150600. I swapped that for a brand new boat (180831) but the new boat didn't feel as nice to sail as the older boat.

I'm sure there is some axe grinding going on on this thread - the odd new name popping up with a constant variation of a theme on every post - I think I'll start a conspiracy theory that certain people on this thread have ulterior motive to put Sailboats down by spreading rumours and insisting on dishonesty rather than error.

Rupert that to be fair is rubbish, there are no new forum names posting in this thread.  Not one!  In fact many have been members for a number of years.  They must be ne of those rare lurkers.  Them posting to quote you is 'Something to be encouraged'  This thread is developing into an interesting discussion around LP and the virtues of Laser racing.  Certainly its helped people ask questions around the integrity of Sailboats.co.uk and actually asked questions of how UKLA are goling to handle this.  So far nothing has been said for the classes governing body.  To my mind this need to be addressed and rubbished by UKLA with a promise that they will spot check and publish findings.  Sure i get that someone supposidly 'Made a mistake'  but this kind of thing really needs to be handled better than a badly worded forum post by Sailboats.co.uk.  Someone need to take ownership and ensure that the class is not dragged into more speculation and infighting.

Which boats would UKLA spot check? If we're talking proper conspiracy theory you would never trust what sailboats.co.uk tell you about which boats are which. Easiest thing in the world to run off another batch of red Lasers. Perhaps right now a whole batch of red lasers are being deep sixed in the deepest part of the atlantic to deny they ever existed and new ones being made with duplicate hull numbers...

As for waiting for the classes governing body, well, if the amount of commmunication the ILCA did over all the questions Lasers sailors (and the UKLA) had over the fundamental rule change thing is any guide you'll have an awfully long wait.

Jim I am not talking conspiracy theory at all.  I just think it makes sense, common sense for all parties to restor confidence in the product, ultimately they are all selling.  I am unaware of the International or national classes communication issues.  I will take your word for that, its woefully disapointing if thats the case.

In my opinion Laser sailing should be the very jewel in the crown of our sport.  I am bitterly disapointed that the UK supplier, the class (international or national) has not made a proper statement about this and introduced messures to restore confidence.  Maybe its just me, I accept that.  But i suspect others fare more closer to this than I share the disapointment.

Jim - it's not conspiracy theory to say that if it were my product, I would invite the UKLA (or RYA) to come in to the warehouse to spot check whatever red boats they wanted to.  I would pay their travel expenses and I would ensure I was open wiith their questions and buy some nice sandwiches from M&S.

I wouldn't expect my punters, and the wider sailing community who race against them to simply 'take my word for it', in fact, I'd rather have the impartiality of independent assessment to put the issue to bed- professionally and tactfully with minimal disruption for all parties concerned once and for all.

They are in Northampton, not North Korea.... get in an independent source to verify it was a mistake, it's in their interests isn't it?

The conspiracy theory only starts when that happens and someone suggests the independent source was given a bung, or reported inaccurately- that would be, imho, ridiculous.

I think all this may be moot anyway in practice - how does LPE or Sailboats.co.uk know what the "optimum mast rake" is?

Reputational damage to the class aside that is.

And that notwithstanding the fact that any decent laser sailor knows that the "all boats are the same" thing is utter b**locks anyway.

HI Ben,

You are of course absolutely right- and good 'uns and bad 'uns goes back as long as I remember reading anything about Laser sailing, as does the well known tales of the top guys picking the best kit and being offered a helping hand in selecting it off the factory floor.

However I think there's a big gap between the top squad sailors picking and choosing, to the dealer actively marketing the differences to joe public club muppet.  Now we can, if we choose to, accept that it was all just a photoshop f**k up on the marketing desk.  Or Sailboats can dispel the rumour and uncertainty with an independent inspection.

I think we're both guessing that the results of an audit are probably not what either the Laser class or the dealer want in the public domain though....

another useful contribution from Sargesail I see.  Discussing, even dissing boats and products that are being sold to us is one thing; dissing other forum user contribution, whether you agree or not with their opinion, well it doesn't feel so good does it?
