Thanks for all the replies. I currently sail aged dinghies so anything a bit 'tippy' is no problem so long as it performs.

Projects are no problem so I will research more, still trying to stay on or under 20ft to get the marina small boat offer!

many years ago we had a Copland Harrier and at the club we used to race against a Medina and a Europa. The Europa is obviously much narrower so tiny down below compared to the Harrier and Medina but it was great upwind. A very sea worthy little vessel and alot of fun for the money. I recall seeing a couple of Europas on Ebay for bargain type money so if your willing to give one a little TLC you may get a bargain. They are also pretty light so a doddle to tow or park in the drive in the winter time. I am off to look on line to see whats out there.

The other boat at the club at the time was the larger Seal 22 which was a great boat. Much bigger but still easily towed if need be. Had a stub lifting keel so unlike the Medina and Harrier still had some stability even with the keel up but not quite as shallow a draft due to the stub.

I had a Hunter 19 for many years and enjoyed racing it and cruising around the channel singlehanded.  It would outsail most 30' cruisers, especially offshore where it would go through anything, but quite wet.  Very re-assuring in any winds.  I wouldn't be as confident in rough weather in a Medina but I believe the Medina would be fatser and more comfortable inshore.  The H19 has got an incredible balance, the tiller can be tied off and left for long periods of time, the Medina sails more like a dinghy with little directional stability.  The Hunter Europa is a big improvement on a 19, it has a self draining cockpit and more room inside but still sails the same.

Hi,

I have sailed Squibs and a Medina, but not a Hunter 19.

I understand that the 19 is less than wonderful, which seems logical with all that top hamper added to a keelboat. Squibs are lovely boats to sail, with a big difference between the best and worst sailors - in other words, reasonably good upwind if you are good. No great shakes downwind, but kite easy to manage.

I'm not a fan of the Medinas as they are very tippy, as indeed are most lift keel boats of this size.

It probably boils down to use - will you ever beach the boat or cruise in muddy, shallow areas, or will you stick to deep moorings and marinas. If the latter, an Apollo Duck search should find you a  range to choose from.

Perhaps a Hunter Sonata if you like Hunters as a marque?

Hi,

I'm thinking it is time for another boat and am considering Hunter 19 single keel (Suib with a lid) or Hunter Medina 20 (lifting keel) or...maybe something else.

Can anyone make a comparison between the 19 and the Medina in terms of sailing ability, windward performance etc etc? Quite happy with the 'big dinghy' feel

As to anything else, I want to try and keep to a max of 20ft (marina fees), cheapish and therefore fairly old and reasonably good looking. Internal space is low on priorities. Done Drascombes etc.

Thanks
