Capsize recover technique- if you're bigger than the kid in the vid, climb over the back apparently:

Exactly so K.W. & R. I'm pretty much with you and your experiences. People are mostly sensible and play the game appropriately to their environment. Those who don't may or may not get the message eventually but they certainly don't win any respect.

I think there are clubs where it gets taken very seriously - which isn't the same as pot hunting at all - where swapping boats in a series wouldn't be the done thing.
Our experience was that it only takes 1 or 2 people to "play" the system at a club which is normally pretty laid back about such things for boat swapping to actually put off other people taking part, which rather defeats the object of the exercise. Of course, the people swapping boats probably don't see it in the pot hunting light at all - they are simply sailing the boat that will give them the most fun on the day. And to be fair, I've not seen much reduction in the amount of changes of boat since we changed the rules back, so that may well be the primary driver - the pot winning being a bonus that isn't there any more, by that route. |

are there any such clubs? Most sailors I know are usually far more intelligent than to derive pleasure from such hollow victories. It's not football after all- full of prima donna histrionics and hatchet men whose various forms of cheating are all part of the game.

Not that I've noticed and certainly not to play the system. As I've said, yes some could but my attitude to anyone who thought overly much about such tactics would be a big "get a life". We are rewarding participation simple as that. No system is perfect but I think this suits our situation and ethos. In a Club where pot hunting is all maybe it would have all the joy sucked out of it.

You don't get crews jumping ship to one more suited to the weather, then?

Actually the idea to adopt was proposed by our Sailwave manager. Principally so as not to see our juniors who mostly sail single handers disadvantaged by occasionally crewing either for each other or an adult.
We are trying to rebuild our racing numbers, hence the focus on participation and any extra labour required to input to Sailwave is not too arduous. Of course any system could be used cynically if anyone was so inclined. We are a small Club untroubled by a cut-throat pot hunting faction so don't really see a problem arising and if it did everyone would know and treat such victories accordingly. |

Saw an Aero in the flesh on Sunday and it looks a nice boat, very tidy. I can see the 7 being very popular and maybe finally taking over from the Laser. Those foils are nice and sharp! Hopefully a bit more wind this weekend to see its form.

That is pretty avant garde, but I like the sound of it. Certainly good for motivating crews. Not sure it delights me as a Sailwave series scorer, mind you. How long have you been running things like that and how is it working out?
